的蒲国。春秋时代，晋文公重耳分封此地，史称蒲邑。战国归魏，改蒲阳。秦属河东郡。汉置蒲子县。西晋永嘉二年（308年）刘渊建汉，曾徙都蒲子，后迁平阳，于此置大昌郡。北魏初属仵城郡。魏孝文帝改蒲子为长寿县，太和十二（488年）年于此置汾州。北周大象元年（579年）置龙泉郡。
隋朝统一全国，视晋西为冲要，开皇五年（585年）废郡置隰州，继设隰州总管府，开始以“隰”命名。开皇十八年（598年），下设隰州县，大业三年（607年）改隰州总管府为龙泉郡，辖隰州、永和、浮山、石楼、蒲县。
唐武德元年（618年）置隰州，属河东道。武德二年设总管府，领隰州、中州、昌州、南汾、东和、西德6州。贞观三年（627）复置隰州。
宋、元、明、清因隰州置。
中华民国元年（1912年）5月，隰州改隰县，直隶山西省。民国三年（1914年）划属河东道，民国十九年年（1930年）撤销河东道，仍直隶山西省。民国二十六年（1937年）9月，山西省第六行政督察专员公署移驻隰县黄土村，晋西事变后又移驻城关镇，辖汾西、霍县、灵石、石楼、永和、隰县、大宁、蒲县、吉县（次年划出）、乡宁（次年划出）、临汾、赵城、洪洞、襄陵、汾西等15县。民国三十五年（1946年）11月28日，隰县解放，九地委、九专署、九分区驻隰，辖隰县、蒲县、永和、汾西、洪洞、赵城、大宁、石楼等县。
中华人民共和国成立后，隰县划归临汾地区。
1958年6月27日，隰县与大宁合并为隰宁县。又与蒲县、永和、石楼合并组建吕梁县。
1961年复改隰县。
