对联又叫“对子”，又称“楹联”、“楹贴”。
对联是我国特有的一种既有社交价值又有欣赏价值的艺术形式。
据传，梁启超到武汉拜会张之洞时，两人就是用对联进行交流。
张之洞：“四水江第一，四时夏第一，先生居江夏，谁是第一，谁是第二？”
梁启超：“三教儒在前，三才人在后，小子本儒人，何敢在前，何敢在后。”
对联的形式要求和特点：对联基本格律六要素
字数相等，内容相关，词性相当，结构相称，节奏相应，平仄相谐。这六要素可分别从基础、语法、声律三方面来加以理解：
字数相等，内容相关（基础要素）
这是对联格律的两个基础要素。字数相等，指的是，若上联是由几个分句组成，则下联也应是由字数上与之一一相等的几个分句组成。总之，若连字数都不能相等，那无论如何也难以称得上是名副其实的对联。
内容相关：从内容看，上下联之间,内容要相关,以起到相反相成或相辅相成的效果。这种关系或者是从相同的角度互相映衬、补充，即所谓“正对”；或者是从相反的角度互相反衬、对照，即所谓“反对”。如:
对联的字数可多可少，多者上百字，甚至上千字。最短的对联，只有两个字。 死 ；生。 （隐喻“宁可站着死，决不倒着生”。）
