the number of后面接什么

the number of后加可数名词复数。

the number of意为“……的数量”，后加可数名词复数；作主语时，谓语动单数。the number of表示“……的数量”时，它是一个整体，所以谓语动词用了单数。

后面加可数名词复数，但是因为中心词是“数量”，也就是说我们的主语是“the number”,所以后面的谓语动词要用三人称单数形式。即： the number of+可数名词复 数+三单谓语；e.g.我们班的人数是40人。The number of students is 40 in our class.

a number of和the number of的区别：

1、意思不同：i number of 相当于a lot of， many， 意思是：许多，一些；the number of意思是……的数；The number of sick students is decreasing. 生病学生的数量在减少；A number of students are sick today. 今天一些学生病了。

2、用法不同：a number of后面动词用复数，the number of后面动词用单数；A number of houses were burnt down in the fire.在火灾中，许多房子给烧毁了；The number of business failures has ri sen.企业倒闭的数量增加了。

3、名词用法不同：the number of表示“……的数目”，of后跟复数名词；a number of相当于many，意为“许多”，后跟复数名词或代词；number前可用1arge，small等修饰， 以表示程度；The number of students in this class is 40. 这个班的学生数是40；A number of students are pl anting trees on the hill. 许多学生在小山上植树。
