意识流小说stream of consciousness fiction of
20世纪初兴起于西方、在现代哲学特别是现代心理学的基础上产生的小说类作品。意识流的概念最早由美国心理学家威廉·詹姆斯所提出。他认为人的意识活动不是以各部分互不相关的零散方法进行的，而是一种流，是以思想流、主观生活之流、意识流的方法进行的。同时又认为人的意识是由理性的自觉的意识和无逻辑、非理性的潜意识所构成；还认为人的过去的意识会浮现出来与现在的意识交织在一起 ，这就会重新组织人的时间感，形成一种在主观感觉中具有直接现实性的时间感。法国哲学家柏格森强调并发展了这种时间感，提出了心理时间的概念。奥地利精神病医生弗洛伊德肯定了潜意识的存在，并把它看作生命力和意识活动的基础。他们的理论观点，促进了文学艺术中意识流方法的形成和发展。
意识流小说不是一个统一的文学流派，也没有公认的统一的定义。其特点是打破传统小说基本上按故事情节发生的先后次序或是按情节之间的逻辑联系而形成的单一的、直线发展的结构，故事的叙述不是按时间顺序依次直线前进，而是随着人的意识活动，通过自由联想来组织故事。故事的安排和情节的衔接，一般不受时间、空间或逻辑、因果关系的制约，往往表现为时间、空间的跳跃、多变，前后两个场景之间缺乏时间、地点方面的紧密的逻辑联系。时间上常常是过去、现在、将来交叉或重叠。这种小说常常是以一件当时正在进行的事件为中心，通过触发物的引发、人的意识活动不断地向四面八方发射又收回，经过不断循环往复，形成一种枝蔓式的立体结构。公认的意识流小说代表作有安德列·别雷的《彼得堡》、普鲁斯特的《追忆逝水年华》、吴尔夫的《到灯塔去》、《海浪》等。
西方小说形式和艺术方法。
心理小说以分析人物的意识层和潜意识层的情感、意识、思想、活动、态度为主，或直接以人物的意识活动来结构作品。
心理小说产生于18世纪的感伤文学。感伤文学崇尚感情，把艺术的力量诉诸感情。它得名于英国作家斯泰恩的同名小说《感伤旅行》（1768）。《感伤旅行》和他的另一部小说《项狄传》（1765）以描写人物复杂的内心活动与感情为主，充满颠倒时序、没有逻辑的联想，使文学开始具有新的内容，描写人物的复杂印象和情感。英国作家理查生把对社会环境的描写与人物心理活动的分析结合起来，着重描写人物的感情和行为动机，把感伤主义引进了西欧文学。其描写心理活动的代表小说是《帕米拉》（1741）和《克莱丽莎》（1748）。同时代的法国作家卢梭的小说《新爱洛绮丝》（1761）和德国作家歌德的《少年维特的烦恼》（1774）都受到感伤文学的影响，注重描写人物的内心情感，并以描写爱情心理为主。
心理小说的开创者为19世纪的法国作家司汤达。司汤达擅长心理描写，他全神贯注于人的心理现象，把其他一切都置之度外。心理小说的心理描写反映了19世纪心理学的发展水平。他的心理描写是意识层的心理思维，限于头脑和感情的理性分析，没有涉及潜意识层的生理状态的反映。因而，他的心理描写非常冷静和理智，充满逻辑和理性，由此显出人物性格力的特点和现实态度。
司汤达的心理描写在内容层次上分为社会和爱情心理两个层次，描写时代的普遍心理状况和精神面貌，细致分析爱情心理的微妙变化和发展进程。他对人物内心紧张的表现已具有现代意识的特征。为此，他被称为“现代小说之父”。由于他的心理意识所表现的“现代性”，使他至今在世界各国仍拥有广泛读者。代表作是《红与黑》（1830）。
19世纪著名的心理小说有奥斯丁的《爱玛》（1816）、福楼拜的《包法利夫人》（1857）和托尔斯泰的《安娜•卡列尼娜》（1877）等。心理小说的情节通常比较单纯，心理描写的鸿篇巨制主要是靠人物的心理描写来建构的。一是直接描写人物心理活动，包括人物的所思所想和内心独白。小说描写人物心理活动的引导语通常是“他想”、“他继续想”、“他暗自说道”、“我想”、“我在心里说”等，这是传统心理描写的套语。
作家分析心理化。心理小说家常以叙述人的身份对人物心理作剖析，这些心理现象是人物本身没有意识到，没有认识清楚的问题。作家把他对人物心灵的认识和理解讲述给读者，形成作家分析心理化。小说描写作家分析人物心理活动的引导语通常是“他没想到”“他想错了”“她不知道”等。例如《包法利夫人》中浪漫恋爱的心理分析是作家对爱玛爱情发展结局的心理预测和它的产生缘由的心理分析，作家的分析是客观的，不带主观色彩。
以人系事，以刻画人物性格为主。心理小说的情节叙事简单，事件平凡朴实，大量的心理描写为塑造人物性格服务，通过心理描写表现人物的复杂性格。如于连性格中的反抗与妥协、自尊与自卑、多疑与敏感、感性与冷静的性格特征和气质特点都通过心理描写刻画得淋漓尽致。安娜的情爱与母爱、反抗与激情的性格冲突在心理描写中也得到充分表现。
心理描写从属于情节。19世纪心理小说依然存在一个情节框架，心理描写依附于情节，不具独立性。情节触动、引发了心理描写，并把心理描写串连起来，体现了传统小说叙述的线性因果关系。它不同于现代心理小说独立存在的意识流描写。
情节心理化。心理小说中的人物经历和心理描述互为层次，有机结合。情节好似引河，心理描写好似水流，它盈满河道，充畅情节，构成了以心理描述为主的叙事结构。情节心理化通常表现为三种情况：引发式、插入式和夹叙式。引发式是以一个很小的事件为引子，以此引出大量的心理描述。例如于连握住德·瑞那夫人的手的细节，引出于连一系列的心理活动。插入式是在心理叙述中插入现实描写的细节。例如对爱玛不堪忍受乏味的家庭生活的描写。夹叙式是一边叙述情节，一边心理叙述，叙述引出心理描述，心理描述又带出情节。例如《红与黑》第43章对于连和玛特儿爱情关系的叙述，既是叙事，又是心理描写。
心理小说在20世纪发展为意识流小说。意识流小说兴起于20世纪20年代的英国，波及到欧美各国。意识流小说是西方现代社会意识的产物，它的理论基础是柏格森的直觉主义、弗洛伊德的精神分析学说和威廉•詹姆斯的心理学。“意识流”的概念由詹姆斯提出，他认为人的意识活动像一条河流一样，是不间断的主观思想意识的流动。意识流小说的代表作家如下：
马赛尔•普鲁斯特（1871－1922），法国作家，意识流小说的主要代表作家。长篇小说《追忆逝水年华》（1913－1927）是意识流小说的奠基作。小说以叙述者“我”追忆往事为主线，插入了“我”的所见所闻。按人物思想流动的心理时间来结构作品，着意描写人物意识流程。以人物主观感受代替传统小说中人物命运、矛盾冲突的主导地位。作品突出带有“内审性”特征，被认为是“革新了题材与写作技巧的新型小说”。
维吉尼亚•吴尔夫（1882－1941），英国女作家，意识流小说的重要作家。她擅长细致描写每个人独有的生活经验与感受，捕捉内心深处转瞬即逝、断断续续的思绪，小说具有鲜明的抒情风格和唯美倾向。代表作有《墙上的斑点》（1919）、《达洛卫夫人》（1925）和《到灯塔去》（1927）。
詹姆斯•乔伊斯（1882－1941），爱尔兰作家，意识流小说的主要代表。代表作《尤利西斯》（1922）被认为是意识流小说的“经典性作品”，也是20世纪现代派小说中成就最高、影响最大的一部作品。小说叙述1904年6月16日广告经纪人布卢姆和他的妻子莫莉、青年艺术家斯蒂芬三人在都柏林的活动情况。这天在文学史上称为“布卢姆日”。小说通过三人一天的经历和各个器官的感受，描绘了都柏林的社会生活全景。
威廉•福克纳（1897－1962），美国作家，意识流小说的代表作家。代表作《喧哗与骚动》（1929），它和《追忆逝水年华》、《尤利西斯》并称为意识流小说的三大杰作。小说采用多角度的叙述手法讲述三兄弟与他们的姐妹凯蒂母女有关的故事，深入人物的潜意识，描写人物内心世界和病态心理。
意识流小说的共同特点如下：
1．以心理时间结构作品。意识流小说家有意打破传统时间观念和传统心理小说的顺时序，消除逻辑时间界限，将感觉中的过去、现在和将来拧在一起组成主观心理时间，随人物心理时间的变化结构作品。心理时间的叙述方式有倒时序、循环时序、颠倒时序、闪回时序和预见时序。

3．以心系人，以心系事。意识流小说以表现人物的心灵活动为主，化解人物心中郁积的种种情结，很少描写人物的体貌特征，淡化情节以至取消情节，事件极其微小。在心灵宇宙范围内写成一曲曲心灵史诗。
写作纯粹的意识流小说有很大的局限，但作为一种艺术手法，它融会到其他类型的小说创作中，心理永远是富有创造性的作家的表现领域。
