古生代西伯利亚、哈萨克斯坦与塔里木三大板块的聚合、消减、俯冲在西天山地区引起了强烈的构造分化，因之产生的岩浆活动、沉积作用、岩石的变质和变形，不仅为金矿化提供了丰富的物质基础（矿源、热源），而且也为成矿提供了各种形式的容矿空间和就位机制。西天山几乎所有的金矿都是在这个背景下形成的。其规律大致如下：
1）空间上成群成带分布，构成了若干个大型金矿带和矿化集中区。整个新疆北部的金矿床（金矿化）的分布明显地集中分布在两大造山带中，即天山造山带和阿尔泰造山带。这两个造山带恰恰是哈萨克斯坦—准噶尔板块向南向北双向俯冲，在塔里木板块北缘和西伯利亚板块南缘形成的两套古生代弧-沟-盆体系，并由弧-沟-盆体系最终被挤压造山的地区。造山带中又可以划分出若干个金矿（化）集中区。如西天山北西段金矿（化）集中区以阿希、恰布坎卓塔和阿庇因迪等金矿为代表，构成了与火山岩有关的金成矿系列；西天山北东段矿化集中区以望峰、萨日达拉、纳楞夏尔和巴巴嘎萨依等金矿（化）为代表，构成了与韧性剪切带有关的金成矿系列。
2）时间上绝大多数金矿床的成矿时间集中分布在泥盆纪和石炭纪，这是因为海西早中期是新疆北部地质历史上构造岩浆活动最为强烈的时期。强烈的火山活动、深成侵入活动、变质和变形作用有效地控制了该区壳幔物质的物理和化学循环和迁移，从而促使地球深部的贵金属物质搬移至地壳浅部而成矿。
3）线形构造对区域金矿化有明显的控制作用。规模宏大的线形构造或是古板块的缝合线，或是古活动陆缘带各亚构造环境的重要分界线。它们不仅控制了区域构造的演化，而且控制了岩浆活动和分布以及变质变形的格局；它们不仅活化成矿物质，而且也提供了有利的容矿空间，是成矿和赋矿的主要场所。
4）火山岩和火山碎屑岩是金矿化的重要容矿主岩。虽然金矿的容矿主岩没有明显的专属性，但西天山地区大量的金矿床却赋存在火山岩和火山碎屑岩中。因此火山活动对金矿化具有重要意义。
5）本区中酸性小岩体和浅成侵入体与金矿化关系密切。在世界金矿分布上，尽管与中酸性小岩体和浅成侵入体有关的金矿在储量和产量上均没有重要意义，但在本区却分布很广，与金矿化关系较为密切。
