然而令他意想不到的是凶手正是这位看似高雅的心理学家。汉尼拔把威尔看成是他游戏中的一枚棋子，故意将威尔引入歧途，让他相信凶手有某种心理障碍，这使得威尔的工作往往都绕进了死胡同。直到一次偶然的机会，威尔意识到凶手的目的可能是杀害人的一部分。
他第一时间找到汉尼拔交换意见，并质问汉尼拔为什么没有想到这点，汉尼拔意识到威尔已开始怀疑他，便想杀死威尔，打斗中两人都受重创。汉尼拔被判无期，被关进巴尔蒂摩精神医院中。威尔则隐退，过起闲云野鹤的生活。
汉尼拔放过警探了，你没看到后来汉尼拔给他写信，说：你的伤至少从外面是好了，等等。然后就是他们一家乘坐游艇出海和一个女FBI（克劳丽丝）提出要见汉尼拔。
