For some students, English is very difficult to learn. It's true that English is different from other subjects. Because we
learn other subjects in Chinese. We know Chinese much earlier than English. So Chinese influences our English learning. Do
you want to learn English well? And then I'll be very glad to share the experiences. The most important thing is to remember
four "C"s.
First, "Carefulness". You must be careful when you do anything, and also, when you learn English. Many students make simple
mistakes at times. 'Cause they are not careful enough. Also, many students don't regard English learning as an important
thing. But we all know that English is the most widely used language in the world. As we are growing up, English is becoming
more and more important in our life. So, when you learn English, please be careful. Further more, you also need to "listen"
carefully. At school, listen carefully when you learn in class. The teacher can tell us a lot. If you have chances to speak
to foreigners from English-spoken country, you should listen to them carefully. Pay attention to their pronunciations and
ways to express.
Next, "Confidence" & "Courage". Many Chinese students are troubled by spoken English. Of course there is a reason about the
language environment. However, the more important thing is that some of us are not confident enough to "open the mouth". When
we meet some foreigners, we hardly speak to them if they don't speak to us. "Confidence" & "Courage" are what we need. We can
practice our English at home. Find a mirror and then speak to ourselves. Then you may feel more relaxed and comfortable than
speaking to others. Don't afraid to make mistakes. But also be careful, don't make mistakes that you know what is right.
The last one is "Curiosity". You need to keep curious. Interest is the best teacher. When you read an English article, see
an English movie, watch some English programs or when you join any other events about English, you should keep curious. If
you learn a new word, then guess the meaning before you use the dictionary. If you find a sentence that you consider very
meaningful, then you can write it down and collect all of them. If you keep curious about English, you may find learning
English is so interesting. Can't you learn English well then?

Win Competition of Environment Protection for Beijing
Although the 2008 Olympics are still three years away, another special competition has already started in Beijing. This time, the competitors are not the athletes from all over the world, but the people living in Beijing. The special competition is not held in a stadium, but in every street and every corner of Beijing. I suppose some of you may have already guessed what the special competition is. Yes, it is the competition of protecting our environment and creating a green Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games.
Someone may ask who is our rival in this competition? The modern Los Angeles, the charming Sydney, or the historic Athens? No, none of them. The real rival is ourselves. It is our bad habits of neglecting to protect environment in our daily life.
Several years ago, I was very lucky to have an opportunity to live in the United States for about two years. I not only enjoyed the beautiful environment there, but also appreciated the American people's active way of protecting their environment. Now, whenever the environment protection is mentioned, a beautiful view of California will arise in my mind: white clouds flying across the blue sky, green grassplot sprinkled with colorful flowers and small animals playing happily among the trees.
I remember that at the beginning of my coming to America, I often went to my father's working place, the United States Geological Survey, to have fun. Each time I found a lot of people riding bicycles to their offices. Among the cyclists, an old man with white hair attracted my attention. Curiously, I asked my father," Why does the old man ride his bike to work every day? Doesn't he have enough money to buy a car?" Father laughed, "No, not because of money. Actually, he is one of the greatest scientists in the world. He can afford to buy a motorcade if he likes. He is just an environmentalist and usually doesn't drive unless going shopping, or in bad weather. In America, there are a lot of environmentalists, who actively protect their environment. For example, in Palo Alto city we are living now, there is even a bicycle-to-work day on May 19th every year to encourage people to decrease air pollution caused by cars".
Later, I also learnt another interesting fact of environment protection there. In some states of America, in order to decrease air pollution, save energy and reduce traffic jams, state governments encourage people to take buses to work or to share a car among several people. They even set special "diamond lanes" in some main streets, which are only for the vehicles with 2 or more people.
The positive actions of American people and the effective measures the American government takes in environment protection fully won my respects and deeply affected my consciousness in environment protection.
When I was back in China, people often asked me: " What do you think of America?" I always bolt out:" Wonderful, especially the beautiful environment." Frankly speaking, after several years, the faces of my American teachers and friends have gradually faded away from my mind, but the blue sky, green grass and lovely animals in California often arise in my mind, and became my dream of visiting there again.
The 2008 Olympics provide us with the opportunity to publicize and practise environment protection in Beijing. Is it possible for Beijing to Is it possible for Beijing to become as beautiful as California? The answer is "yes", but the dream needs every Beijing citizen's full support and active moves to accomplish.
From now on, if every student who is driven to school can take bus or ride bicycle to school once a week, if every car owner goes to work in a car pool once a week, we can make a difference. The Speech about Environment
We live in a deluge of waste. About a tonne of waste per person every year goes to landfill in this country, and that is about as bad as it gets anywhere in the world. As a nation we are stupid when it comes to waste. It is not just the environmental impact, the toxic leachate that dribbles out of landfills, or the methane gas that escapes or flares into conflagration, it is about the waste of waste -the squandering of resources that landfills represent.
The resources wasted during production - it is estimated that about 90 percent of waste is generated pre-consumer; the resources wasted by our single-use mentality, and the human resources wasted by ignoring the rich job opportunities in re-use and recycling. It is a bit of an evolutionary intelligence test. Have we clicked on yet to the fundamental reality of life on earth, that we live on a finite planet with limited resources, and that our very existence depends on how we husband those resources? The very existence of waste indicates a failure of our understanding, because there is no waste in nature, only by-products that feed another part of the system. Humans must learn from the wisdom of life itself if we want to develop ways of living that are truly sustainable. This bill is an attempt to move us in that direction.
Lastly, public organisations will have to consider waste minimisation in their purchasing and they would have to report on their waste generation each year.
Essentially, the bill provides an economic engine to drive waste minimisation through the levy. It provides a body to provide national coordination and leadership, and it gives a mechanism to reduce the production of waste in the first place through the extended producer responsibility provisions. Members probably know that local councils, the resource recovery sector, and local community groups have been calling for a number of these things over a number of years.
I understand it will need some amending to align it with any sector agreements that are reached, and I know that local government and waste industry people are working, negotiating, and talking to discuss how such a levy would best work. I recognise that the bill might be too prescriptive in places, and I am comfortable with the idea of negotiating amendments. I am comfortable with the idea that the bill will go to select committee and that we will hear from local government, waste sector people, resource recovery people, and the community sector, and as a result of that we will amend the bill. That is what the select committee process is all about. But, in principle, let us recognise that this is a sound approach to reducing our waste deluge. I look forward to engaging actively and widely with other political parties across this House and with the public and different sectorial groups, and I look forward to cooperating with all of those players to make this bill as effective, practicable, and achievable as possible.
