太阳系一共有八大行星，其中内侧的五颗行星在远古时期被古人发现了，所以古代不同的民族都用各自的语言给它们起了名字。这五颗行星的中文名字就叫金星、木星、水星、火星和土星，那为什么要用金木水火土来命名呢？

金木水火土，可能是按照太阳距离远近的顺序来起的：水星、金星、火星、木星、土星。中国古人曾经把水星叫辰星，把金星叫做太白，把火星叫做荧惑，把木星叫做岁星，把土星叫做镇星。之所以又叫金木水火土星是因为古人把这五颗行星和日月阴阳五行理论联系在一起了，太阳太阴之精在天即日月，五行之精在天即五星，此谓之七曜。

五颗行星，加上太阳和月亮，是每个人抬头都可以看见的，对于古代文化影响非常大，所以你看一周七天的名字，实际上就是七曜之日的意思，这点在日语里翻译的很清楚，直接按照字面意思翻译成了“日曜日（周日）、月曜日（周一）、火曜日（周二）、水曜日（周三）、木曜日（周四）、金曜日（周五）、土曜日（周六），其实就是我们所学的星期几，欧美沿袭的是希腊罗马传统，用神灵来命名五星，水星Mercury墨丘利即希腊神赫尔墨斯，金星Venus是维纳斯即希腊神阿芙罗狄忒，火星Mars是战神玛尔斯，木星Jupiter是朱皮特即神王宙斯，土星Saturn是农神，只不过我们翻译时，并没有用神名，而是直接翻译成了中国传统的名称，简单又好记。 后面的两三颗行星（冥王星曾经也被认为是行星），因为那是望远镜时代新发现的，所以没有传统的名称能用，就按照对应深的职位翻译成天王星、海王星、冥王星，当然，还有一颗，就是我们的地球。
