一．谈猫——“平”中露真情
首先，作者是用用平实的语言、亲切交谈的口吻向读者述说他眼中的猫。品读课文，我们仿佛置身于作者家中，听他津津有味地向“你”介绍猫的脾气禀性，品评种种惹人喜爱的举止情态，而那“古怪”、“淘气”的猫似乎如在眼前，时嗔时喜，活灵活现，于是不知不觉中让“你”受到了作者情绪的感染，为之动心，与之共鸣。与这样的语境氛围相一致，文章语言呈现出通俗明快的口语化特点。老舍先生选用生动活泼的口语语汇言事述感，描摹物态，使语言上口入耳，亲切有味，富有表现力。比如，说“暖和”不说“温暖”；说“成天”不说“整天”；说“钟头”不说“小时”……如果我们仔细辨味，还会发现这些词语不仅有浓烈的口语色彩，而且用得极为妥当，读起来言之有物、言之有情，别有一番韵味。
二.怜猫—— 语气显真情
课文口语多、短句多，常常带着语气词。在这位艺术大师笔下，即使是那些貌似平常的语气词，也获得了丰富的表意功效，韵味十足，耐人寻味儿。“说它老实吧，它的确有时候很乖”。一个“吧”字把作者那种对猫的性格捉摸不透的语气情态维妙维肖地传达出来了，又与“古怪”之说暗相吻合。“说它贪玩吧，的确是呀，要不怎么会一天一夜不回家呢？”这里连用了三个语气词，实实在在地突现了作者对猫的关切怜爱之情：担心、翘望、心疼、着急，种种情态尽在其中。
三.爱猫——妙用人称“你”
课文第二自然节还写道：“它要是高兴，能比谁都温柔可亲：用身子蹭你的腿，把脖儿伸出来让你给它抓痒，或是在你写作的时候，跳上桌来，在稿纸上踩印几朵小梅花。在这一长句中，连续用了三个“你”字。“你”是人称代词，通常都是称呼对方用的。而这里的“你”并非是确指，而是泛指；是“你”中有“我”，意思是“不管是谁”，包含不仅“我”喜欢猫，任何人见了都会感到可爱，更使我们感到作者爱猫的真实感情。
四．赞猫--- 巧用拟人法
