安史之乱爆发后，郭子仪率兵南征北战，为平定叛乱立下了汗马功劳，唐明皇因而把公主许配给郭子仪做儿媳，并为他建造了富丽堂皇的河东府。

不久新宅添孙，全家上下高兴自不必说，但郭子仪的孙子从小在蜜水里泡大，娇生惯养成性，长大后挥霍无度，等到先辈们去世后，门庭渐渐衰落，没用几年时间，万贯家产就被消耗殆尽，他只好沿街乞讨。一天，他来到河西庄，想起30多年前的奶妈，便去寻访，庄前左右都问遍了，可是人们都说不知道，郭孙非常扫兴，天快黑了，这时，又走来一个农夫，他上前一打听，原来竟是乳母的儿子，他们一边说，一边走，一会儿就到家了。进入院宅，放眼望去，只见粮囤座座，牛马成群。郭孙不解地问："家财如此富有，你为什么还要自己劳作呢？"主人说："家产再大，也有吃空的时候。家母在世的时候，率领我们发奋创业，才得这些家产。勤俭持家，其中乐趣无穷啊！"郭孙听后非常惭愧。主人不忘旧情，拘留郭孙管账，无奈他对管账一窍不通，主人不禁叹息到：“真是三十年河东享不尽荣华宝贵，四十年河西寄人篱下。”
