到汉朝时候还在使用青铜武器，不是因为当时的汉朝买不起铁制武器，而是因为当时的冶炼技术有限，对于铁制武器的锻造技术还非常落后。加之当时没有探测铁矿石的设备，缺乏铁矿石的探测经验；所以在汉朝时候，铁矿石也十分稀缺，而铁制品的价格往往会比银制品还要昂贵。这才是汉代还在使用青铜武器的真正原因，就如同古时候的琉璃（今天的玻璃）一样，因为缺乏冶炼技术，就变得格外稀罕了。
据史料记载我们古人在很早以前便已经掌握了青铜的冶炼技术，而且在商朝时候就已经掌握的非常成熟；在这之前之后很长的一段岁月中，一直都是青铜器的占据了金属的主要地位。而冶铁的技术也是在后来才慢慢发展起来的，在冶铁技术的发展历程中，那些炼丹修炼的术士帮了不少的忙。
在汉朝时期国内大量的军队还在使用青铜制品的兵器，是因为当时的铁矿数量较少，如果全部使用铁制品武器，则需要相当多的铁矿；很显然以当时的探测设备，还无法发现大量的铁矿资源。所以依旧以成熟的青铜冶炼技术为主，而士兵们所持有的武器，也大多是青铜武器。
在当时除了铁矿资源发现的太少以外，还因为铁的冶炼技术要比青铜难很多；以当时汉朝的科技发展程度，还不足以用来锻造、冶炼铁矿石。学过化学的我们都知道，铜的熔点在1000摄氏度左右，而铁的熔点却在1500摄氏度左右；这对于今天的我们来讲，要想锻造铁是一件非常容易的事情，但在古时候的汉朝，这却是一件难以跨越的鸿沟。
所以汉朝士兵之所以都在使用青铜武器，并不是因为铁很贵；而是因为铁矿石储量探测有限，更因为铁制兵器冶炼过程太过艰难。
