三只小猪是兄弟，为抵抗大野狼而有不同的遭遇，大哥盖草屋，二哥盖木屋，三弟盖了砖屋，最后只有不嫌麻烦的三弟的屋子没有被大野狼弄垮，还把大野狼给煮来吃了。
目前较为流传的版本因针对儿童心理而修改过，将狼吃猪，猪吃狼的情节修改掉，变成三弟最后保护了大哥和二哥，并用巧计赶走大野狼。在英语世界中，三只小猪的童话其实也是童谣。其中大野狼的台词因押韵有趣而相当著名。

第一只小猪被狼吃掉了。第二只小猪用木头盖了一所房子。狼来了，它把第二只小猪的房子推倒了。狼把第二只小猪也吃掉了。第三只小猪用砖头盖了一所房子。狼来了，它推了一下砖头房子，砖头房子一动也不动。
狼就用头去撞砖头房子，可砖头房子没动，狼头上却撞了一个大大的包。狼就说要从烟囱里爬进来。小猪听了就在火炉里点了火。狼从烟囱掉下来就被火烧跑了。
