指南针的发明
中国古代四大发明之一。利用磁铁在地球磁场中的南北指极性而制成的一种指向仪器，有多种形体。战国时期，已发现磁石吸铁的现象，并用天然磁石制造“司南之勺”，“其柄指南”。此后,经过长时期的实践,发现人工磁化的方法，造成更高一级的磁性指向仪器。宋代科学家沈括首先记载了地磁偏角，说用天然磁石摩擦钢针，使之磁化成为磁针，可以指南，而常微偏东，并介绍了四种支挂磁针的方法：一是浮于水面，二是放在指甲上,三是放在碗沿上,四是线缕悬挂（见彩图缕悬法指南针 据沈括记载复制模型）。宋军中配备指南鱼，是将薄铁叶剪成鱼形而磁化，用于阴天和黑夜判断行军方向。后来又发展成磁针和方位盘联成一体的罗经盘,即罗盘。曾三异在《因话录》中记载当时有“地螺”,“或有子午正针，或用子午、丙壬间缝针”。这种地罗还是一种水罗盘。当时，阴阳家用地罗看风水。在清丈田地和判决土地诉讼时,也使用地罗。据《萍洲可谈》、《宣和奉使高丽图经》、《诸蕃志》和《梦粱录》记载，至晚在北宋后期，指南针已用于航海，南宋时，使用“针盘”导航。这种针盘还使用“浮针”，这对于海上交通的发展，中外经济文化交流，起了极大作用。

造纸术的发明
东汉元兴元年(105)，蔡伦在前人造纸术的基础上，改革和推广了造纸技术。新的造纸术使旧的不便书写的麻纸变成了至今大致结构没有改变的良纸工艺。
在蔡伦造纸术出现之前，在中国，商代用甲骨，西周用青铜器，春秋时用竹简、木牍、缣帛作为记事材料。汉代，农业发达，经济繁荣，国力强盛，文化事业蓬勃发展。笨重的竹简和昂贵的缣帛已不能满足人们的需求，寻求新的书写材料已成为时势所趋，造纸术就因此应运而生。
据20世纪中叶以来在新疆、陕西、甘肃等地出土的麻质古纸，专家确认为西汉麻纸的片状纤维物，说明造纸术可能出现在蔡伦之前，而且可能与人们对纺织用麻的处理过程有关。但这些西汉麻质古纸上都没有发现可以辨识的书写文字，加上对化验分析结果解释不同，对西汉是否已出现了造纸术中术界尚有很大争议。闪此《后汉书·蔡伦传》对蔡伦发明造纸术的记载，是迄今为止有时间和人物的准确记载造纸术的最早记录，广为人们承认。
印刷术的发明
自从有了纸以后，随着经济文化的发展，读书的人多起来了，对书籍的需要量也大大增加了。
晋朝初年，官府有书二万九千九百四十五卷。南北朝时候，梁元帝在江陵有书籍七万多卷、隋朝嘉则殿中藏书有三十七万卷，这是我国古代国家图书馆最高的藏书记录。
除了官府藏书，私人藏书也越来越多。比如晋朝郭太，有书五千卷；张华搬家的时候，单是搬运书籍，就用了三十辆车子。
印刷术发明以前，只有官府和郭太、张华那样的富人才能有这么多的藏书，一般人要得到一两本书也很不容易，因为那时的书都是手抄本。要抄这么多的手抄本，得花费多少人力呀！这种情况如果不改变，怎么能够满足社会上的需要呢？
