乌玛的童年极不快乐，由于来自信奉佛教的家庭，在全部信仰基督的美国小镇上她倍受歧视，被人讥讽为“丑陋”。她没有读大学，16岁便离开了家乡只身闯荡纽约，17岁时她已成为一名很不错的模特。 乌玛最早是在VOGUE上拍摄家居照片出道，那些慵懒的家居形象让人印象深刻。
演艺事业
低俗小说1988年，她有了电影处女作《亲吻老爸说晚安》，接下来的《终极天将》和《危险关系》瑟曼开始崭露头角，但她并未寻着这条青春玉女的路线走下去。1990年，著名导演菲利普·考夫曼推出第一部标有“NC-17”级的影片《情迷六月花》，乌玛-瑟曼在影片中饰演美艳绝伦且孤傲不羁的巴黎女子阿娜伊丝·宁，在作家亨利和其妻琼之间大玩双性恋情。1992年在《致命恋人》中她是配合姐姐制造命案的手。《 蓝调女牛仔》使她成了长着巨大拇指且有着同性恋倾向的女孩西西，这些角色都有些怪异，但乌玛瑟曼的表演却力戒张扬，在平淡中表现人性深度。不过乌玛-瑟曼主演的影片大多没有大红大紫，所以想不起她在银幕上的经典形象，倒是几部做配角的电影让她大放异彩，有的甚至成为影片的标志。最著名的当属《低俗小说》，黑色短发装扮下的乌玛完全是另外一种风情，她性感狂野，趴在床上跷着脚叼着烟眼神迷离的样子成为电影史上最经典的海报之一。《危险关系》中纯得连偷尝禁果都闪耀着圣洁光茫的处女塞西尔，《蝙蝠侠与罗宾》中妖艳邪恶、身体象藤蔓一样扭曲的毒藤女，虽然失败，却让乌玛一显身手。之后，她和连姆·尼尔森主演了新版的《悲惨世界》，与拉尔夫·费因斯合作了《复仇者》，与法国著名演员杰拉尔·德帕迪约合作了古装剧《欲望巴黎》，参演了英国文艺片名导詹姆斯·艾弗瑞的作品《金碗》等。
婚姻生活
乌玛·瑟曼 伊桑·霍克
在经历了与英国演员加里·奥德曼短暂而失败的婚姻后，1997年，她和伊桑·霍克在拍摄影片《千钧一发》时产生恋情，这对金童玉女于1998年5月1日举行了婚礼。伊森.霍克回忆他们第一次见面的情景，是在一家银行的自动取款机前。当时他排在她的后面，他一下子被她的美貌和气质征服了，于是上前去做了自我介绍。当时霍克也已经拍了《死亡诗社》这样很有影响的电影，而且在好莱坞是有名的才子。霍克回忆说，"她没有看过《死亡诗社》那部片子，非常礼貌地和我寒暄了几句，但我感觉她把我当成了一个普通的影迷。"后来他们在《哥塔卡》(Gattaca)这部科幻电影中又遇见了，而且演对手戏。电影没什么反响，倒是成就了他们的姻缘。2001年7月，乌玛.瑟曼怀着她的第二个孩子，和米拉麦克斯公司说，可能她不能按预期时间接受《杀死比尔》中"新娘"这个角色了。为此，米拉麦克斯公司决定推迟拍摄计划，而且告诉导演昆廷.塔伦蒂诺不能换人，一切等乌玛生完孩子再说。乌玛的第二个孩子是在2002年1月出生的，而在不久后她就开始中国功夫的训练了。但是2003年还是传来两人离婚的消息。
第三次婚姻
