荀子是中国儒家思想的著名大师，在战国时期和孟子齐名，都是对中国儒家学说作出巨大贡献、对中国文化具有深远影响的哲学家和思想家。从某种意义上来说，荀子是儒家学说的异类分子，他的思想的主流是儒家学说，但是在他的思想中，又蕴含着法家思想的萌芽，所以，他的两位弟子韩非子和李斯，后来成为法家思想的著名代表。可以这么说，荀子的思想中，既有儒家学说又有法家思想的萌芽。

孔子和孟子在人性的问题上，都是乐观主义者。特别是孟子认为，人性本善，既然是人性本善，呢么每个人都有向上向善的可能，就是说人皆可以为尧舜。所以在治国方略上，儒家提倡推行仁政，以德治国。而荀子则是与孟子相反。荀子在人性的问题上，是一个标准的悲观主义者。荀子认为人生来就是自私的，人性是恶的，而外界环境是可以影响人性的。从这个理论出发，荀子认为要改变人的恶的本性，那就要用礼法，一方面用软的礼，另一方面用强力的法，这样的话，人才有改变和向善的可能。所以荀子认为，只要加强法治建设，涂之人可以为禹。照样可以成为好人。而这里的法，就包含了法家思想的影子。

荀子虽然注重法家学说，但归根结底还是儒家，尊君为第一前提
