下片开头四句：“江妃笑，堆成雪。鲛人舞，圆如月。”是对涨潮声势的夸张描写。仙女欢笑，鲛人起舞，仿佛的在举行水上庆典，为潮神喝采助威。江妃、鲛人系两个典故。据《列仙传》载，江妃二女，游于江汉之滨，遇郑交甫，解佩珠相赠，郑行数十步，二女不见，珠亦不见。《博物志》载，鲛人居于南海水中，其眼可泣珠。这四句其实是词面对潮水击岸，卷起千朵浪花，似堆白雪，如溅明珠的壮丽景观所引起的丰富想象。“正危楼湍转”四句写退潮时的情景。“湍转”言奔腾的狂潮退了下去；严滩，指钱塘江下游富春江畔东汉严子陵垂钓的地方。退潮的势头，连蜿蜒起伏的吴山也挡不住，一直退到严滩才停了下来，结末二句“是英雄，未死报仇心，秋时节”是以情结景，也是对上片“谁荡激，灵胥一怒”的呼应。
在这首词中，作者笔下的钱塘潮是人格化的。“是英雄，未死报仇心”与“谁荡激，灵胥一怒”前后呼应，将伍子胥愤怒的性格特征赋于自然景观，作者用“怒”写起潮，以“笑”状涨潮，用“愁”绘退潮，更赋于潮水以人的性格。这里既有对自然景观的惊叹，又有对古人坚强不屈精神的赞颂。全词不是为写景而写景，作者所陶醉的是一个在感觉上非常具体，在心理上又模糊抽象的感情，透示了作者难以言说的意趣，抒发了激荡壮烈的情怀。
