（一）用五十根蓍草，先抽去一根象征“太极”，始终不用，剩下四十九根信手分成两半，象征“两仪”，左右手各拿一半。
（二）从右手抽出一根，夹在左手小指与无名指之间，象征“三才”（天、地、人）中的“人”。
（三）放下右手所拿的蓍草，用右手数左手中的蓍草，四根数一次，剩下最后的余数又夹在左手无名指与中指之间，据说四根象征“四季”，而余数象征“闰月”。
（四）以左手数右手原来所拿的那一半蓍草，方法和上面一样，余下来的蓍草夹在左手中指与食指之间。这时，左手夹的蓍草合在一起，不是五根，就是九根，剩下的蓍草不是四十根就是四十四根。
（五）把那九或五根蓍草放在一边，剩下的四十或四十四根再分成两半放在左右手中，又从右手那把里抽出一根夹在左手小指和无名指之间，像上面所说的那样四根一次地数，数完左手那一把再数右手这一把，两次余下来的蓍草加上先夹在左手的一根，一定是四根或八根。这时，剩下的蓍草不是三十二、三十六根就是四十根。
（六）再如法操作一次，余数有形成八根或四根，去掉余数后，剩下的蓍草不是二十四、二十八、三十二根就是三十六根。
（七）以上三次分数蓍草，叫做“三变”。三变的结果有四种：二十四、二十八、三十二、三十六。这四个数分别是“四”的六、七、八、九倍，六为老阴，八为少阴，九为老阳，七为少阳。由此便得一爻。
（八）由于六十四卦每卦有六爻，所以要来六次，共十八变。到得出六爻而成一卦时，便可以到书中相应的卦中去体悟、揣测、解读了。
