伟大的作曲家约翰·塞巴斯蒂安·巴赫（公元1685～公元1750）是成功地把西欧不同民族的音乐风格浑然溶为一体的开山大师。他萃集意大利、法国和德国传统音乐中的精华，曲尽其妙，珠联璧合，天衣无缝。巴赫自己在一生中并未享有盛名，而且在死后五十年中就已被世人遗忘。但是在近来一个半世纪中他的名气却在不断地增长，今天一般认为他是超乎时空的最伟大的两三位作曲家之一，而且有些人认为他是其中最伟大的作曲家。
巴赫于1685年出生在德国爱森纳赫。天赐良机，他生在一个音乐天赋受到重视、音乐成就受到鼓励的环境里，他的家庭早在他来世前许多年就已经在音乐界赫赫有名了。他父亲是一位优秀的小提琴手，祖父的兄弟中有两位是具有天赋的作曲家，叔伯兄弟姐妹中有几位是颇受尊敬的音乐家。
巴赫九岁丧母，十岁成了孤儿。由于他嗓音美妙，经济拮据，少年时期靠奖学金进了在吕讷堡的圣·米歇尔学校。1702年他从圣·米歇尔学校毕业，翌年在一家室内乐队当一名小提琴手。在随后的二十年中，他乾过许多行当。巴赫在一生中主要是以一位卓越的风琴家而闻名，虽然他还是一位作曲家、教师以及乐队指挥。1723年巴赫三十八岁时开始在莱比锡的圣·托马斯教堂任歌咏班领唱，他在余生的二十七年中一直担任此角，1750年，他的心脏停止了跳动。
巴赫从未居过高位，不过总能养家糊口，他在有生之年远不如莫扎特和贝多芬（甚至不如弗朗兹·李斯特和弗雷德里克·萧邦）那样驰名。并不是巴赫所有的雇主都能赏识他的才能。莱比锡教会希望能聘到一位“第一流音乐家”，只是他们未能雇上最初认定的两位人选，在无可奈何的情况下才让巴赫担任歌咏班领唱一职！但在几年以前，他要辞去魏玛公爵庭中的风琴手和首席小提琴手的职务，另谋新职，公爵对此耿耿于怀，结果将他投入狱中。巴赫度过了三个多星期的铁窗生活，公爵终于慈悲大发，将他释放（左图，子建收藏：席夫版巴赫十二平均律）。
巴赫二十一岁时同他的叔伯二妹结为伉俪，他们一共生了七个孩子，但是当巴赫三十五岁时妻子不幸夭折。翌年他鸾凤再续，可是他的第二个妻子非但不能帮助抚养头七个孩子，反而又给他生了十三个。巴赫死后只留下九个儿女，其中有四个成为真正著名的音乐家。这的确是一个音乐天才之家！
巴赫是一位多产的作曲家。他的作品包括有将近300首的大合唱曲；组成《平均律钢琴曲集》的一套48首赋格曲和前奏曲；至少还有140首其它前奏曲；100多首其它大键琴乐曲；23首小协奏曲；4首序曲；33首奏鸣曲；5首弥撒曲；3首圣乐曲及许多其它乐曲。总计起来，巴赫谱写出800多首严肃乐曲。
巴赫笃信宗教，是个路德教徒。他希望他的乐曲为教会服务，他的大多数作品都是宗教音乐。在音乐形式上他无意创新，而是把现有的形式推上顶峰。
在约翰·塞巴斯蒂安·巴赫去世后的半个世纪里，他的音乐大体上无人问津（但是值得注意的是那个时代的最伟大的音乐家──海顿·莫扎特和贝多芬极为欣赏巴赫的天赋）。新的音乐风格在发展，巴赫的“旧式”乐曲一时声消音灭。但是1800年以后，人们对巴赫乐曲重新发生了浓厚的兴趣，从那时起，他的声誉和名望与日俱增。在今天这个非宗教的时代里，巴赫远比他在世期间的名望更高。一位两百年前在风格和主题方面都被认为是旧式的作曲家，今天却受到了广泛的颂扬。
一般认为巴赫是所有著名作曲家中水平最高的艺术家。他谙熟他的时代的所有音乐形式，并对其中任何一种都能运用自如，达到了炉火纯青的地步。例如他对旋律组合法（同时演奏两种或两种以上不同曲调的方法）在艺术上的精通程度堪称前无古人，后无来者。此外，他的管弦乐作品逻辑性强，变幻多样，主题贴切感人，旋律丰富多姿，因此他愈加倍受赞颂。
