要知道中国历史上很多得道高僧很少主动收徒弟。并且这些得道高僧对于自己徒弟的要求也非常的严格，一般来说都是很多人主动自己送上门找相应的高人进行指导，只有当这些徒弟符合高人的要求的时候，这些得道高僧才会为这些人进行指导。但是要知道那些真正修炼有一些功绩的得道高僧，一心都想要在道方面进行研究，根本就没有其他的心思去收徒弟，从而也没有把自己在道教方面的成就和领悟传给另一个人。
道教在研究的时候，一般是以成仙为目的，但是要知道想要成为神仙，几乎一个普通人一生都很难达到。并且在修炼的过程中要耗费非常多的时间和精力。如果新手没有那些得道高僧进行指导的话，很多相应的道理根本就领悟不了，从而也会半途而废。再加上那些真正有所感悟的高人，也不会轻易的进行指导，也就让道教的这个圈子越走越小。
佛教和基督教等几个宗教都是以增大自己的教徒，宣传自己宗教信仰为目的。这些宗教主要是想把自己所倡导的理念让世人接受，但是道教不一样，道教仅仅就是修炼成仙。所以也就导致其他的这几个宗教的规模越来越大，但是道教的规模越来越小。再加上现如今受到科学思想的影响，很多人并不相信自己，通过修炼就能够成为神仙。
中国的本土宗教是道教，因为相对于其他宗教，没有传教士这个角色，导致道教只能在本土发展，而其他宗教，要么有传教士，要么有国内的人去学习。
因为中国本土道教重在修身养性，不慕功名利禄，所以不想别的宗教那样风靡，这也是外来者不及我们的原因。
