中生代是全球成矿的重要时期。根据作者的最新统计数据，在全球25种矿产、489个大型超大型矿床中，中生代大型超大型矿床共有135个，占全球大型超大型矿床总数的27.6%，仅次于新生代（图2-1）。若按每亿年形成的矿床数量统计，中生代的成矿强度亦仅次于新生代，达到73个/100Ma（图2-2）。

世界中生代矿床以与岩浆作用和沉积作用有关的矿床占绝对优势，部分为多成因的或复杂成因的矿床。矿床类型分为18种，但以沉积型、热液型、火山岩型、岩浆热液型、矽卡岩型、金伯利岩型、蒸发岩型及斑岩型、蛇绿岩型最为重要（图2-3）。其中，热液型矿床指成因较复杂的中低温热液矿床，岩浆热液型矿床中包括石英脉及蚀变岩矿床等。
世界中生代矿床在空间上主要分布于显生宙造山带中，其次是前寒武纪地块的显生宙沉积盆地及构造带，其中又以东亚造山带、特提斯—喜马拉雅造山带、非洲-阿拉伯地块与西伯利亚地块的显生宙沉积盆地最为重要。
东亚造山带主要包括我国的华南褶皱系及东南沿海褶皱系、俄罗斯远东地区的鄂霍茨克褶皱系及日本的岛弧带等，以与中生代岩浆作用有关的钨锡钼及叶蜡石矿床等的大量发育为特色，主要矿床类型有以中国西华山、大吉山为代表的岩浆热液（石英脉）型钨矿床，以中国柿竹园、大厂为代表的矽卡岩型锡矿床，以日本冈山、韩国莞岛、中国龟湖为代表的火山岩型叶蜡石矿床等。热液型及层控热液型汞锑矿床主要分布于我国的华南褶皱系西部，以万山汞矿床、木利锑矿床为代表，这类矿床可能具有复杂的成因。

特提斯—喜马拉雅造山带中的中生代矿床类型主要有分布于中亚及北非的以土库曼斯坦沙特利、阿尔及利亚哈西勒迈勒为代表的天然气田，分布于北非及西南欧的以摩洛哥梅斯卡拉、乌拉德—阿卜墩、赫米塞特为代表的沉积型磷矿床及钾盐矿床，分布于西南欧的以西班牙阿尔马登为代表的热液型汞矿床等。
非洲—阿拉伯地块和西伯利亚地块的中生代沉积盆地中含有丰富的石油天然气资源，波斯湾含油气盆地和西西伯利亚含油气盆地是世界最重要的含油气盆地。著名的油气田有科威特布尔甘、沙特阿拉伯加瓦尔、伊拉克鲁迈拉、阿联酋扎库姆和俄罗斯乌连戈伊、波瓦尼科夫、亚姆堡垒等。
