一、创作背景

司马光曾患历代史籍浩繁,学者难以遍览,因欲撮取其要,撰纪传体史。初成《通志》8卷,起战国至秦二世,表进于朝,引起宋英宗的重视。治平三年(1066),诏置书局于崇文院,继续编纂。宋神宗即位,赐书名为《资治通鉴》,并序以奖之。元丰七年(1084)书成。
