古人认为，汉字是仓颉创造的。对此，先秦典籍中多有记载，如《荀子·解蔽》：“好书者众矣，而仓颉独传者，一也。”《吕氏春秋·君守篇》：“奚仲作车，仓颉作书，后稷作稼，皋陶作刑，昆吾作陶，夏鲧作城，此六人者所作，当矣。”《韩非子·五蠹篇》：“古者仓颉之作书也，自环者谓之‘厶’，背‘厶’谓之公。”汉人的著述中也多有记载。如《淮南子·本训》：“昔者仓颉作书，而天雨粟，鬼夜哭。”特别是东汉的许慎，在他的具有奠基意义的语言文字学专著《说文解字·叙》（参见附录《许慎和他的〈说文解字〉》，下同）中谈得最详细：“古者庖牺氏之王天下也，仰则观象于天，俯则观法于地，视鸟兽之文与地之宜，近取诸身，远取诸物，于是始作易八卦，以垂宪象。及神农氏结绳为治而统其事，庶业其繁，饰伪萌生。黄帝之史仓颉，见鸟兽蹄迒之迹，知分理之可相别异也，初造书契，百工以乂，万品以察。”
由上可见，在古代社会，仓颉造字说已是定论。而许慎更是明晰地提出了仓颉造字的缘起、思路和结果。
不过，后世特别是近世学者对仓颉造字说多持怀疑乃至否定态度，认为汉字不可能是一人一时一地造出来的，而是汉民族先人集体长期累积的结果。
要讨论这一问题，我们认为必须得先对汉字起源的涵义做一界定：即汉字的起源是针对我们现在所使用的汉字体系而言的。明确了这一前提，这些学者的观点就值得商榷了。
第一，由以上介绍和其他史料记载可知，在2500多年前的春秋战国时期，仓颉造字说已经是当时社会的一种常识。近代以来，通过对出土文献的研究及与不同来源资料的多方互考印证，我国古史记载的可信度相当之高。如西晋初年，由盗掘汲郡（今河南汲县，战国时为魏地）魏王墓冢而现世的《汲冢书》中的编年古史——魏国史书《竹书纪年》，关于商周史实很多记载与甲骨文、金文吻合，在前不久完成的我国大型史学研究项目夏、商、周断代工程中，文献资料很大程度上依据了《竹书纪年》。再如，通过对甲骨卜辞等不同来源资料的研究表明，《史记·殷本纪》关于商代帝王世系的记载是基本可信的，就是一些历来为史学家以其言不雅驯而不屑的传统文献，如《五帝德》、《帝系》、《山海经》等，也被证明具有表示事实的一面。所以，在虽然没有确凿证据证是但也同样没有确凿证据证非的情况下，对古史的记载一概采取怀疑乃至否定的态度的做法是不可取的。
第二，现知的最早的成体系的汉字是殷商甲骨文，其历史上限至少在3300年以前。经过专家学者考证研究，已辑录甲骨文单字5949个（其中多有同字异构，据最新研究，约为3500个左右），发现甲骨文是一种相当成熟的文字体系，完全符合“六书”造字原理。这说明，甲骨文的产生，应该是更久远的事情。仓颉所处的年代大约在四千五六百年以前，从前面的介绍可知，仓颉造字是一种有缘起（“庶业其繁，饰伪萌生”）、有理论指导原则（“分理之可相别异”）、有实现结果（“百工以乂，万品以察”）的自觉的创造活动。以甲骨文相对照，说汉字为仓颉所造，从历史沿革上讲是合理的。
第三，通过对创新规律的研究发现，历史上所有的重要思想、理论的形成和重大的发明、发现，都是由个人独立完成的。而且这些重要的创新成果即使让大众认识和接受，往往也要经过一个漫长的和困难的过程。由此可见，仓颉造字说符合创新规律。
鉴于以上分析，我们认为仓颉造字说是可信的。至少可以认为，汉字成为成熟的、有体系的文字是从仓颉开始的。至于说仓颉是人名是官名还是其他什么含义可以暂不细究，因为我们这里关注的是汉字起源这一事实。
中国人（实际上远不止中国人）所使用的汉字是仓颉所创造的。如今，在世界上被广泛使用的多种电脑汉字输入法当中，就有一种名为“仓颉汉字输入法”。作为“中华文字鼻祖”，几千年来，仓颉不但受到海内外炎黄子孙的尊崇，而且受到世界敬仰。位于商丘市虞城县王集乡的仓颉墓每天都迎来络绎不绝的国内外游客。
仓颉为黄帝的史官。为了记载事情，传递信息，黄帝命他造文字。仓颉首先发明了象形文字。后来因象形文字不能满足人们的需要，他又发明了会意字、形声字等。为人类文明和进步作出了巨大贡献。黄帝对仓颉发明和推广文字的功劳非常看重，仓颉死后，他命人将其悬棺而葬之。如今的仓颉墓前，枝叶繁茂的古柏掩映着一座大殿，殿门两旁的木柱一有副对联：“天下文字祖，古今翰墨师”.
距今有六千年左右的西安半坡村遗址，彩陶上有一些类似文字的简单刻划符号，这是具有文字性质的符号，学者们认为这可能是汉字的萌芽。
汉字是谁创造的，至今并没有一致的说法。 《世本》、《荀子》、《吕氏春秋》、《韩非子》等古文献，都说汉字是在黄帝时代由仓颉、沮诵两人创造的。许慎《说文解字》试图作出比较圆通的解释，认为伏羲作八卦“以垂宪象”，启发人们根据不同事物去作不同的符号。神农氏时代“结绳而治”，但庶事繁多，终于不能满足。在黄帝时代就出现了仓颉，，“见鸟兽蹄选之迹，知分理之可相别异也，初造书契”；并说仓颉初造书契时，“依类象形”谓之文，后来形声相益谓之字。经过长期演迸发展，总结成构成汉字的六种方法，称为“六书”，即“指事、象形、形声、会意，、转注、假借”。
汉字常用字有7000个左右，共有汉字90000多个。
