朝鲜壬辰卫国战争前夕，任全罗左道水军节度使。他改制的龟甲船能攻能防，在抵御日本海军的海战中发挥了重要作用。万历二十年（1592年），日本关白丰臣秀吉入侵朝鲜，李舜臣统帅朝鲜龟船舰队在玉浦、唐项浦、泗川、闲山岛、釜山等地重创日军。后因谗言一度下狱。万历廿五年（1597年），日本出动14万兵力，水陆并进入侵朝鲜。李舜臣被再次起用，出任三道水军节度使。他率朝鲜官兵和明朝援军共同御敌，给日军以毁灭性打击。万历廿六年（1598年），他和明朝水师杨绍勋总兵和副总兵邓子龙共同指挥联合舰队迎击日本海军，是以打响露梁海战。虽然此役以日军大败而告终，但李舜臣仍在战事中遭遇到岛津家军队的突袭，最后遭火枪所伤，战死疆场，明将邓子龙也于此战牺牲。
邓子龙
邓子龙（1531年－1598年12月16日），字武桥，号大千，别号虎冠道人，明朝水师将领，生于江西省丰城市杜市镇邓家村。
明嘉靖年间江西内乱，邓子龙“平乱”有功，授广东把总。1583年（万历十一年）二月，缅甸侵扰云南，邓氏率兵入滇，降斩缅军数百人，使其归附于明。
1598年（万历二十六年）朝鲜战事复起，邓子龙奉命率军二百援朝，为水师副总兵；同年十一月十九日（12月16日）在露梁海战中战死，遗体归葬丰城，朝鲜王朝并为他立庙祭祀。生前著有《横戈集》。
