当时，任长霞面临的局面非常艰难：民警队伍涣散、积案堆积如山、群众怨声不断，行风评议年年倒数第一。她深入基层调查摸底，跑遍了登封17个乡镇区派出所，找到了存在问题的症结所在。随即从“从严治警”入手，清除了队伍中的3个害群之马，15名长期不上班、旷工、迟到以及参与违法违纪行为的民警被开除和辞退。此举令民警的精神面貌焕然一新。
任长霞还抽调20余名民警成立“控申专案组”，按照“立足化解，妥善处置”的思路，变上访为下访，变被动为主动，把控申工作查处信访积案作为一项“民心工程”，纳入工作的整体目标，她把每周六定为局长接待群众日，诚心倾听群众呼声。据不完全统计，3年来共接待群众来信3467人次，使476户上访老户罢访息诉，被广大人民群众赞誉为“任青天”、“女包公”。
在整顿队伍、严肃警风的同时，任长霞将全部精力集中到了破大案、破积案，打响了一场又一场攻坚战。“4·15”东金店强奸焚尸案、“4·18”大冶镇火石岭村绑架案、“5·18”特大盗枪案、“5·28”石道杀人案、“6·9”强奸轮奸女教师案、“7·2”唐庄杀妻杀子案等一系列大要案纷纷告捷。在一起杀人案件中，她第一时间到达现场。在分析过案情后，她把自己一个人关在案发的房子里与尸体待了整整一夜，终于从蛛丝马迹中找到线索，成功迅速地破获了案子。面对辉煌的战绩，干警和群众服了。大家都说：“咱登封来了个女神警，案发一起就破一起。”
刑事犯罪案件破获了，任长霞又着手解决深层次问题。登封市有两起家喻户晓的强奸杀人案。一起是西岭区域内自1997年到2001年的5年间，先后有多人被抢劫、被杀，数名妇女被强奸，案件难以侦破，群众反映强烈；另一起是长达11年未破的两少女被奸杀案。任长霞研究决定将此两案定为攻坚战的重中之重，抽调精干力量强力侦破，终于在短期内将两名犯罪嫌疑人抓获归案。
作为一名女公安局长，任长霞集刑警的威严和女性的温柔于一身，尤其对被人们视为弱势群体的妇女、儿童，她更是事必躬亲、关怀备至。为最大限度地保护妇女儿童的合法权益，她先后组织开通了“110”反家庭暴力服务台、设立了妇女维权示范中队、成立了多警种联动、相互协作、共同作战，全方位、多层次、多渠道的快速反应机制。2001年5月3日，登封市大冶镇西施村煤矿发生特大瓦斯爆炸事故，13名矿工遇难。任长霞在处理这起事故中，得知11岁的女孩刘春玉的父亲遇难，母亲也因心脏病突发去世，刘春玉成了一名孤儿，她便毫不犹豫地承担了小春玉生活和学习的全部费用。小春玉对记者说：“任妈妈让我重新得到了母爱，我为有这样的好妈妈感到骄傲！”
为了使更多的孩子得到救助，2002年1月，任长霞向民警发出倡议，在全局开展了“百名民警救助百名贫困学生”活动。目前该市有126名贫困学生得到了救助，重新回到了课堂。孩子们都亲切地称任长霞“任妈妈”。
任长霞在老百姓中有着极好的口碑，几乎每个人都知道登封有一位实实在在为老百姓办事的任局长。他们常常聚在一起讲述见到任局长的情形，念叨着任局长帮他们做的每一件实事：探望困难老乡、帮孩子建希望小学、把手机号留给乡亲们、替老百姓主持公道……
2004年4月14日，任长霞遭遇车祸，因公殉职，年仅40岁。追悼会那天，登封市万人空巷，14万群众自发前来悼念，和他们心中的英雄道别，这在登封的历史上还是首次。
群众的眼睛是雪亮的。人民永远不会忘记那些真心为他们做好事、办实事的人们，一旦形成了口碑，就会万古长青，因为只有扎根于人民心目中的口碑才是不朽的。任长霞用她的实际行动实践了“立誓为公，执法为民”的人生誓言。她胸怀理想甘于奉献，疾恶如仇，剑胆琴心，时刻关心人民疾苦。这样全心全意为人民的干部，值得每一个人学习。
