大冰期(ice age)也叫冰河时代(在新生代的第四世),冰期,冰川期
现在地球上冰川的面积为1497万平方公里，占陆地面积的10%，但在地球的历史上，冰川的面积曾经要大上很多倍，形成大冰期(ice age)。有记载的大冰期一共发生过三次，周期为将近三亿年发生一次。第一次发生在大约六亿年前的元古代末期，称为震旦纪大冰期，这次大冰期在世界各大陆产生的时间略有不同，当时地球上的动植物还很贫乏。第二次发生在大约三亿年前的石炭纪至二叠纪，这次大冰期主要发生在冈瓦那古陆，其中在南美洲和非洲发生和消退的时间较早，在印度和澳大利亚发生和消退的时间较晚，冰川退却之后，出现大面积的舌羊齿植物群。第三次大冰期就是最著名的第四纪大冰期，也是对现在影响最大的冰期。

第四纪大冰期中冰川有数次扩张和消退，分别被称为冰期(glacial eppoch)和间冰期(interglacial eppoch)。一般认为现在的地球正处于间冰期，第四纪大冰期比前两次时间要短，现在的气候也比历史上很多时期要寒冷，因此第四纪大冰期应该并未结束。第四纪大冰期实际上并不局限于第四纪，早在第三纪就已经开始。世界各地的冰期和间冰期的次数和时间并不完全相同，每次冰期的具体时间也有争议，南极的冰川发生的时间要比北半球要早得多，在两千多万年前的中新世就已经形成了大冰盖。冰期在国际上的划分以阿尔卑斯山为标准，阿尔卑斯山地区的冰期曾经被划分为玉木冰期，里斯冰期，民德冰期和贡兹冰期这四次冰期，后来又发现了更加古老的多瑙冰期和比贝冰期，其中最晚的玉木冰期研究的最详细。最后一次冰期在世界各地的时间相差不大，大约在一万多年前结束。第四纪大冰期最盛时，冰川的面积为4714万平方公里，占陆地面积的32%，整个加拿大和北欧都在冰盖的覆盖下，冰川消退之后，留下了大规模的湖泊群，所以加拿大和芬兰都成了“千湖之国”。第四纪大冰期使地球上的面貌大为改观，但并未造成大规模的集群灭绝，物种可以退却到少数“避难所”中得以生存。东亚和美国东部都是“避难所”，保存了比较多的古老物种，而欧洲的阿尔卑斯山阻碍了物种的南迁，因此欧洲的生物种类比中国要少得多。第四纪末有很多大型哺乳动物在地球上消失，现在很多学者相信，它们的灭绝不是冰期的结果而可能是人类活动造成的。
冰期 (ice age)
具有强烈冰川作用的地史时期。又称冰川期。冰期有广义和狭义之分，广义的冰期又称大冰期，狭义的冰期是指比大冰期低一层次的冰期。大冰期是指地球上气候寒冷，极地冰盖增厚、广布，中、低纬度地区有时也有强烈冰川作用的地质时期。大冰期中气候较寒冷的时期称冰期，较温暖的时期称间冰期。大冰期、冰期和间冰期都是依据气候划分的地质时间单位。大冰期的持续时间相当地质年代单位的世或大于世，两个大冰期之间的时间间隔可以是几个纪，有人根据统计资料认为，大冰期的出现有 1.5 亿年的周期。冰期、间冰期的持续时间相当于地质年代单位的期。
在地质史的几十亿年中 ，全球至少出现过 3 次大冰期，公认的有前寒武纪晚期大冰期 、石炭纪- 二叠纪大冰期和第四纪大冰期。冰川活动过的地区，所遗留下来的冰碛物是冰川研究的主要对象。第四纪冰期冰碛层保存最完整，分布最广，研究也最详尽。在第四纪内，依冰川覆盖面积的变化，可划分为几个冰期和间冰期，冰盖地区约分别占陆地表面积的30％和10％。但各大陆冰期的冰川发育程度有很大差别 ，如欧洲大陆冰盖曾达北纬48°，而亚洲只达到北纬60°。由于气候变化随地区的差异和研究方法的不同，各地冰期的划分有所不同。1909 年，德国的A.彭克和E.布吕克纳研究阿尔卑斯山区第四纪冰川沉积，划分和命名了4个冰期和3个间冰期。随后，世界各地也都划分出相应的冰期和间冰期，北半球第四纪冰期几个地区冰期的划分与对比见表。

大冰期的成因，有各种不同说法，但许多研究者认为可能与太阳系在银河系的运行周期有关。有的认为太阳运行到近银心点区段时的光度最小，使行星变冷而形成地球上的大冰期；有的认为银河系中物质分布不均，太阳通过星际物质密度较大的地段时，降低了太阳的辐射能量而形成地球上的大冰期。

“冰川是气候的产物”，这是冰川学界的流行说法。那么，气候又是什么的产物呢？笔者的说法是“气候变化是地球系统的变化在大气圈中的反映”。冰冻圈是地球系统的一部分，所以我们可以说“气候的一部分是冰川的产物”。当然，气候的主要部分应该是地圈（包括壳、幔、核）的产物，因为地圈占地球系统总质量的99.9％。冰川与气候的关系紧密，它们同时受地圈变化的制约，我们甚至可以说“冰川和气候同是地圈变化的产物”。地圈的变化又受宇宙因素的制约，笔者经过长期研究，提出如下观点：宇宙磁场与地核磁流体的电磁耦合作用，可能是地球表层各系统变化的根本原因，也是冰川与气候变化的根本原因。
1、大冰期与银地磁耦合
在地球的46亿年历史中，一般公认曾出现过7次大冰期，关于其成因很多学者提出多种假说，但均不能令人信服。最近笔者提出：当银河系旋臂磁极与地球磁极同向，且相互作用时间在40Ma以上者，将出现大冰期。
地磁极性的倒转存在着3亿年的长周期。一个银河年的长度从20亿年前的4亿年逐渐缩短，到最近一个银河年其时间长度仅约2亿年。现在太阳系正经过银河系的一个旋臂，其磁极方向为正（与现代地磁极相同）。将银河系两个旋臂（它们的磁极性刚好相反）经过地球的时间与地磁场倒转的时间标在图1上，可见当银河旋臂与地磁极性方向相同，且同号时间维持在40Ma以上者。近40亿年来共出现过8次（表1）。其中最近7次刚好对应着7次大冰期。

众所周知，大冰期总是与造山运动相伴出现，这有其必然性。因为地势平坦时，大气热机效率很低，使得行星风系很弱，极一赤温差很小，不会形成大冰期；只有当造山运动使地势变得不平坦时，大气热机效率才会大提高，使行星风系大增强，极地大降温，才能形成大冰期。第四纪大冰期是与青藏高原隆升紧密相伴的。造山运动的构造营升力来自于地核环流转变为“强对流型”，而银河旋臂与地磁极同向且相互作用时间在40Ma以上，是使地核环流被激发为“强对流型”的必要条件。

青藏高原的隆升与第四纪大冰期的形成是说明上述观点的一个典型个例44.57MaBP，地球磁极开始转为正向，它与银河系的正极旋臂即开始相互作用，使地核环流从“准地转型”开始向“强对流型”过渡，青藏高原开始抬升，随着地磁极性倒转为负极，高原抬升运动停止，变为夷平运动。如此在45Ma的时间内经历多次反复2.5MaBP青藏高原被抬升至2000m左右的高度，高原季风大转型，才开始出现第四纪大冰期。
2、冰期与地磁强度变化
冰期、间冰期为105a的旋回，比大冰期短3个量级，一般认为它是米氏周期的结果，但有很多问题用米氏理论解释不通，如近73万年来青藏高原被公认为有3次冰期，即末次冰期（1～7万年前）、倒数第二次冰期（13～30万年）和倒数第三次冰期（50～72万年），其时间间隔远超过10万年，用米氏理论不好解释。事实上，地球轨道的三要素的综合可使极地的太阳辐射量变化达20％～30％，但使中纬地区的变化量却小于5％，因此笔者认为关于青藏高原冰期的成因应另寻解释。用地磁场的变化或许是一种更合理的解释。“倒三冰期”是青藏高原隆升的冻结高度时，所必然出现的一次“最大冰期”。从Kukla（1987）给出的西峰磁化率曲线可知，1～7万年前和22～35万年前为两个磁化率低值时段，它们基本上与末次冰期和倒数第二次冰期相吻合；而8～13万年和48～55万年为磁化率高值时段，它们又与间冰期基本相合。再从王苏民等（1996）给出的若尔盖剖面的结果可见，2～5万年之间出现过4次磁极性漂移（极漂），16～26万年之间亦出现过5次极漂，而5～16万年之间仅出现过1次极漂，极漂事件频繁的两个时段，恰好对应着两次冰期；极漂事件很少之时，则对应着间冰期。这亦表明：地磁弱时易出现冰期，地磁强时易出现间冰期。这一结论似乎与上一节的结论有矛盾，其实并不矛盾，形成大冰期的直接原因是地形隆起，它要求磁场强，且相互作用时间较长；对冰期，甚至小冰期和冰川波动，因时间尺度较短，地形的升高已不是主要矛盾，它所要求的地地热释放较少，有利于降温，地磁弱时较容易满足这一条件。
3、小冰期与太阳磁场变化
15、17、19世纪亚欧大陆发生了三次明显的冰进，冰川学界称之为“小冰期”，它的时间尺度是102a，比冰期又短3个量级。这3次冰进刚好与3次太阳黑子极小期（19世纪极小）基本对应，其中出现在17世纪的Maunder极小期是2000多年来太阳黑子最少的一个时段。黑子少意味着太阳磁场弱，它与地磁场的耦合作用亦将变弱，致使冰期前进。小冰期是地球史上有名的灾害群发期（所谓“明清灾频期”），另一个“两汉灾频期”也是出现在太阳黑子的极小期中。大地震大旱魔在中国大地上接连逞凶。从冰芯记录中可知，在高山冰川区“小冰期”是一个低温、降水略多的时段，这与同期山外平原区是一个低温、干旱时段有所不同。这种差异似乎是大气中地形性热力环流调整的结果。
4、冰川波动与气候变化
冰川波动一般包括冰舌进退（其特征时间为101a）和冰川物质平衡，零平衡线高度变化（其特征时间为100a）等几项内容，它们均与短气候变化紧密相联。近40多年是各种地学资料最多的年代，可以进行较仔细的讨论。有些气候学家认为，在这段时间里出现过两次气候突变，一次在60年代中，一次在80年代初。或者说，可以将此40多年的气候分为三个时段。以下将60年代中至70年代末这一时段简称为70年代，重点讨论此时段的冰川与气候波动及其可能原因。
70年代是北半球的低温时段（南半球为高温时段），我国大部份地区是低温少雨时段，青藏高原积雪面积亦变小。可是由于地形性热力环流的调节，使高海拔区在该时段的降水反略有增加，于是前进冰川的比例大为增加。这一点与“小冰期”的情形颇为相似。
70年代是地球自转的慢段，是太阳黑子的相对低值时段，也是我国大陆地震多发的时段。这些特点均与“小冰期”相似。它们之间是否有什么共同的地球物理过程在其中起作用？这是值得地球科学家着力研究的问题。
5、冰川与气候变化的一种可能机制
地球与宇宙之间除了有引力的相互作用外，还有热和磁的相互作用。“热”首先是作用于地球表层，这已为人们所认识。“磁”则首先应作用于地球外核，因外核是磁流体。当太阳系（或银河系）磁场与地球磁场同向时，则若磁场增强将会激发地核流体中的对流活动增强；反之，会使地核中的对流活动减弱。地核环流通过核幔边界影响地幔对流的方式应有多样，其中太平洋之下的地核对流与全地幔对流之间的相互耦合应是其一种，有迹象表明，太平洋的地幔对流可能是全球最强之一。
当太阳系磁场减弱时（如太阳黑子减少），通过电磁相互作用使地核对流减弱，于是从地核向上传的热量减小，这可能是小冰期和本世纪70年代气温降低的基本原因；另一方面因为地核对流减弱，使得太平洋之下地核的“距平”环流变为下沉流，它通过粘性作用带动核幔边界层作“距平”向西运动，这是地球自转减慢，西太平洋和东亚大陆地震活动增强的原因。而东亚大陆地幔此时为“距平”下沉流，它是亚欧地区气温和地温降低、降水减少的基本原因。此时，大陆上空出现大尺度的“距平”下沉气流，使云量减少，这有利于地形性热力环流增强，致使高海拔区的降水不至减少甚至略有增多，造成了冰川活动以前进为主。这是笔者对“小冰期”和70年代冰川相对前进的原因解释。这一设想是否正确，有等实践检验。有一点可以肯定的是，实际情况远比上述设想要复杂，宇宙磁场不仅仅影响到太平洋下的地核流场，它还将影响到地核三圈环流、过赤道环流全球尺度的地核流场，使地球表层呈现出纷繁复杂的变化。
