秦朝以后，“中国”一词的含义有了改变。在汉代，人们常把汉族建立起来的中原王朝称为“中国”，兄弟民族建立起来的中原王朝也称“中国”。南北朝时期，南朝自称“中国”，把南朝却称做“岛夷”。辽与北宋，金与南宋，彼此都自称为“中国”而不承认对方为“中国”
严格的说，古代“中国”是个形容词，而不是一个专有名词。这就是说，我国古代各个王朝都没有把“中国”作为正式国名。如汉朝的国号是汉，唐朝的国号是唐，以后建立的王朝国号有宋、辽、金、元、明等，清政府与外国签订的条约上签署的国名是“大清”。
