元代随着国内外贸易的发展需要，中国瓷业较宋代又有更大的进步，景德镇窑成功的烧制出青花瓷器。青花瓷的普遍出现和趋于成熟，产销兴旺，元人蒋祁著《陶计略》（记元代景德镇瓷业情况的唯一书籍）中记述：“窑火既歇，商争取售，而上者择焉，谓之捡窑。交易之际，牙侩主之……，运器入河，肩夫执券，次第件具，以凭商筹，谓之非子。”
元青花瓷以景德镇为代表，其制作精美而传世极少，故而异常珍贵，根据时间大致分为延佑期、至正期和元末期三个阶段，其中又以“至正型”为最佳。
元青花瓷开辟了由素瓷向彩瓷过渡的新时代，其富丽雄浑、画风豪放，绘画层次繁多，与中华民族传统的审美情趣大相径庭，实在是中国陶瓷史上的一朵奇葩，同时也使景德镇一跃成为中世纪世界制瓷业的中心。
元青花瓷的造型
元青花瓷造型独具特色。从制作工艺上看，此时出现了胎体厚重的巨大形体，如大罐、大瓶、大盘、大碗等。但也有精细之作，如胎体轻薄的高足碗、高足杯、匜、盘等。在元代社会，青花瓷还没有成为宫廷或人们日常生活的必需品，除酒具、明器外，主要产品是对外输出，因此元青花瓷的造型有一定特殊性，其原因乃是为了满足不同地域、不同生活习惯使用者的需要。如大罐、大瓶、大盘、大碗是为了适应伊斯兰国家广大穆斯林席地而坐、一起吃饭的习惯而特别生产的大型饮食器皿。而元时生产的小型器皿如小罐、小瓶、小壶则多销往菲律宾。根据考古资料可知，许多小件元青花瓷都是当年为满足东南亚人陪葬需要而制作的外销商品。除了外销，元青花生产者对内为了符合元代社会生活习俗还生产了中小型瓶、炉、笔山、高足碗、连座器等。大体可综合为五大类。
罐类：大罐，包括高形、矮形、八棱形3种，连盖通常可高达60厘米以上。小罐，包括敛口四系方形、撇口双系瓜棱形、唇口双系鼓腹式、唇口溜肩圆腹双系式等，体高一般为7~8厘米；还有鼓式盖罐。八棱器为元时创新品种。
瓶类：有梅瓶、玉壶春瓶、蒜头瓶、兽耳瓶、戟耳瓶，另有富时代特色的四系扁瓶及塔式盖瓶等，其中以梅瓶、玉壶春瓶多见。梅瓶附盖，盖内有一管状子口，与瓶口牢牢套住。
壶类：见于著录的主要有3种，分别是凤流壶、梨式壶、执壶，均制作精巧。
碗类：大致分两种，一种为高足碗（有敞口、敛口），一种为大碗，口径达40厘米以上。高足杯体形较小，高仅为10厘米左右，又有靶杯之称。大碗口径一般都在30厘米以上。
盘类：有大盘（口径45厘米以上）、中盘（口径一般为30厘米左右）、小盘（口径15厘米左右）。折沿花口形多见。
此外，还有鼎、水盂、香炉、观音等，其中以高足杯、玉壶春瓶、罐、梅瓶和大盘五种造型为最多。
总之元青花瓷器造型既有恢弘雄伟的大器，又有秀美灵巧的小器，不论何种器型均形态优美，古朴端庄。
元青花瓷的纹饰
元代景德镇陶工在继承唐宋制瓷成就的基础上进一步创新，弥补了形体上工艺粗糙的不足，使元青花更精美。
装饰技法
青花与刻花、印花、瓷塑、浅浮雕等多种技法相结合，绘画充分发挥蓝白的艺术效果，有白地青花、蓝地白花或青花线描为地几种风格。在装饰时，工匠结合不同器型采用不同技法，有的用两种、三种方法配合或几种方法集中于一体，刻花线条粗犷有力，印花线条圆润耐看，浅浮雕效果立体感强。此外应该注意的是，元青花纹饰绘画方法以平涂为主，结合勾、皴、点、染技法，线条苍劲有力，显示出元代工匠高超的绘画才能。
构图方法大致可分为饱满和疏朗两类。饱满类型的装饰，无论圆、琢器，全器被青花纹饰所覆盖，有的器身布满青花纹饰达8层之多，以此突出表现元青花的壮美之感。元青花饱满型装饰的另一种表现形式是通体以卷枝纹或海水纹为地，突出白色的花纹或在地纹上作菱形曲线开光，开光内绘一主题纹饰。这种饱满设计方法多在八棱器上体现，看似繁缛，实则安排有序，具有强烈的美学效果和时代风格。疏朗形式的装饰，讲究无论是圆、琢器的青花纹饰都由单独纹样构成，装饰画面疏朗，活泼自然。如日本大阪市立东洋陶瓷馆的青花龙纹玉壶春瓶，全瓶绘一条龙盘绕器身，画面简洁，给人以龙在无垠空间中自由飞腾之感，视觉效果极好。另一种疏朗纹饰是写实或写意的瓷画，画面较开阔。再有一些民间供器及殉葬品的青花纹饰就更为疏简豪放，用线条快速描绘图案，可谓一气呵成，别具一格。元青花的纹饰中有几种较为规范，从而形成了元代纹饰的特色：
1、变形莲花瓣纹，俗称“八大码”，无论圆、琢器常以8个莲花瓣作装饰带，在每个花瓣内又加绘多种花纹，有朵花、朵云、火焰、杂宝等等。莲花瓣的画法元代风格较为明显，均用一道粗线和一道细线平行勾勒出轮廓线，每片花瓣间不相连，留有一定空隙。
2、花卉纹饰在元时多以莲花和牡丹为主，其次为菊花。这三种花的花与叶的绘画形式比较固定，牡丹花叶呈肥硕状，为尖辫形；莲花花叶呈带双翅的葫芦形叶片；菊花花叶为五叉的叶片。三种花朵都不填满色而有自然留白边现象。
3、栀子花为元青花中独特纹饰，五瓣形小花小叶状缠枝花多用作边饰。有关专家论证此花别名蘑卜花，传说为佛喜爱的花。
4、大多数青花盘的外壁及瓶、罐肩部装饰有缠枝莲花纹，盘外壁莲花为六朵者较多见。
5、瓶、罐肩部往往有青花云头纹，称为“云肩”。云头纹内多加饰海马、海莲、折枝花、麟麟等，又称垂云纹，是元青花上极具特色的装饰，其他时代少见。
6、由浪花与海水组成的二方连续图案，在细线条描绘的海水纹中以粗实线勾绘浪花组成海浪纹饰，形成特色鲜明的元代海水纹。
7、蕉叶纹常作边饰或纹饰间的装饰带，画法讲究用粗线描绘蕉叶边线，再用细线描绘叶脉。
纹饰题材（一）主体纹饰元青花的主体纹饰中，植物类有：牡丹花纹、莲花纹、菊花纹、松竹梅纹、月梅纹等。除以上主花外，在组合图案中还出现牵牛花、山茶花、海棠花、月季花、枣花及萱草、灵芝、芭蕉或竹石葡萄、瓜果、草虫等作画面衬托。动物类有：龙纹、凤纹、麒麟纹、鱼藻纹、鸳鸯卧莲纹、孔雀纹、鹿纹、海马纹等。其中元代龙纹极具特色，身躯细长如蛇，龙头呈扁长形，双角，张口露齿，细长颈，四腿细瘦，筋腱凹凸，爪生三指、四指或五指，分张有力，肘毛、尾鬃皆呈火焰状。元青花中的人物纹别出心裁，并与戏剧相结合，将著名历史人物的故事情节移植到瓷器画面上，呈现一种新的艺术境界，具极强的感染力这是其他时代无法比拟的。
人物故事都绘于体型较大的器物，诸如盖罐、梅瓶、玉壶春瓶等。盖罐、梅瓶腹径较粗，作画面积大，多用来表现场面宏阔的题体。画面多置于器物中段的主体部位，视觉突出，给人以强烈的冲击力。玉壶春瓶颈肩，纤细，硕腹下垂，一般选择人物少、场画小的画面，如需要表现大的场面时，往往以全器作画。此类题材主要有蒙恬将军、周亚夫细柳营、文姬归汉、昭君出塞、萧何追韩信、三顾茅庐、敬德救主、陶渊明爱菊等。绘有此类纹饰的青花瓷器质地细腻，釉色白而匀称，着色所用的氧化钴料，不论国产的青料，还是进口的苏泥勃青料，都很纯正。画工的绘画技艺高超。同时具备这些条件的瓷窑甚少，这也是人物故事青花瓷器较少的原因，若有，多数出于当时瓷艺水平最高的景德镇窑。此外，元代瓷器的装饰纹样与佛教艺术有结合，莲瓣、莲花、杂宝等几乎成为元青花瓷器上必有的装饰内容，说明了佛教艺术对工艺美术品的影响。（二）辅助纹饰元青花的辅助纹饰品种繁多，有图案性质的写实内容或几何纹样。明以后，青花瓷纹饰大多沿袭元青花画法，但略见变异。这种差别在辅助纹上有更为明显的反映，是鉴别元青花的重要佐证。
1、波浪
元青花上的波浪纹应用于大盘的边沿、盘内纹饰间的隔离及花卉纹的底纹。边沿采用波浪纹的大盘一般为菱边。
波浪纹由浪纹和波纹两部分组成。元青花上的浪纹以轻重变化的粗线勾勒，形状如“佛手”，如棕榈叶又如姜芽，称姜芽海水。波纹以极细密的线条画成，放射状或旋涡状，后者如人的指纹。浪与波之间有留白以增加空间感。有些波浪纹中加绘简笔朵花。
模印的花卉纹饰带有些以波纹衬地，作为相邻的波浪纹的延伸。
明初青花波浪纹已简化，浪纹用细线双勾中空，有的加绘细小圆圈以示浪花。波纹粗而疏，层层叠叠，汹涌起伏。已不见指纹状的旋涡。
2、变体莲瓣
莲瓣分写实性质的和抽象性质的，后者为变体莲瓣，有仰覆之别，应用很广。元青花上的变体莲瓣纹饰于瓶、罐类器物的颈部和胫部。每瓣独立，由外粗内细双框组成。内框细线一笔勾成，外框双勾后填色或粗线画成。粗线画成的分两笔，均从中间起笔。莲瓣肩部方折。内框线条和莲瓣内纹饰连笔。莲瓣内填杂宝（火焰、宝珠之类）、花卉（以莲菊为主）或云头，云头下加一圆圈。
明初变体莲瓣外框互相借用，肩稍圆柔，莲瓣内图案简单，有宝相花、旋涡纹等。
3、回纹
元青花上的回纹源自青铜器的云雷纹。单体绘制，自左上方起逆时针走笔，从外到内一般为套叠两框，也见单框。有变形回纹，笔画简化而不完整。
明初青花回纹两个一组，笔画相连，借用一条边线。明初回纹的另一种画法是整个饰带一笔完成，从外向里画后再逆向画出，开始第二个单位。
4、卷草纹
元青花上的卷草纹每一单位独立绘制，一正一反相接。也有的二上一下或一下二上相接。无中心波谷曲线，明初卷草纹先画一中心波谷曲线，在上伸发卷草纹，明中期起，有不画中心波谷曲线的卷草纹。
5、钱纹
元青花上的钱纹饰于盘沿口和瓶口等处，有整钱组成的装饰带，也有半钱交叉组成的饰带。钱纹以外圆内方为基本造型，有种种变化。有些钱纹中的方穿画成菱形，菱形每边加一点，如菱形饰带画法。
6、菱形
元青花上的菱形饰带画于盘的口沿或作瓶罐纹饰的间隔。圆口大盘一段用菱形饰带装饰边沿。每一单体为两个菱形套叠，有的在其间填青。内菱形中心和四边各有一点。
7、蕉叶
元青花上的蕉叶纹来源于商周青铜器的纹样，饰于瓶颈和下腹部。叶的中茎画至叶尖，一笔画成或两笔画成后填色。叶的边沿用细线勾勒后填色。叶脉细线勾勒。有单层和前后双层两种画法。
明初蕉叶纹中茎用两条平细线画至叶尖，不填色，永乐起叶的中茎已不到叶尖。叶纹细密如鱼骨。叶边如锯齿般尖细，轮廓线用复笔加粗。一般为前后双层画法。
8、如意云头
元青花上的如意云头为中间粗两边细的三条线画成，二阶，三阶，四阶均有。云头内纹饰稠密丰满，有细小的花卉纹、海水纹等，有些在此底上再画动物纹。
元青花如意云头有数种装饰方法：
（1）饰于器物上部的云头下垂（称云肩），饰于器物下部的云头上伸。一般由3个，4个或6个云头组成。
（2）饰于大盘盘心一周，云头向盘心伸展，云头间不相连，由6个三阶云头对称组成。
（3）由两个云头对接或4个云头相接组成“开光”，前者用于瓶腹，后者用于盘心。
明初如意云头以外粗内细的双勾线画成。云头间以简单的弧线相连而不用反向云头。云头缩小或大小相间分布。云头内绘简单图案，或折枝花或叶脉或填色。
明初青花另有用单个云头开光的装饰方法。
除上述纹样外，元青花的辅助纹饰还有鱼鳞纹、云纹、旋涡纹、三角带纹等形式。
