前面已经交待了罗敷的年龄是“二十尚不足，十五颇有余，”即当时的罗敷是一位风华正茂的二八佳人。当使君向她提出无理要求时，作品写她夸耀丈夫在仕途上如何少年得志，步步高升，如今己“四十专城居” ——做了一城之主，和使君的地位相当。然而我们知道，“四十”只是一个概数，估计其夫的年龄必在四十以上；即以四十为算，一个“二十尚不足十五颇有余”的青年少女嫁给了一个不惑之年的地方长官，不要说在古代，就是在改革开放的今天，也会受到社会上有身分人的耻笑。更何况其夫“十五府小吏，二十朝大夫，三十侍中郎，”乃是一位飞黄腾达、青云直上、“坐中数千人，皆言夫婿殊”的官员。谚语有云：“男大当婚，女大当嫁“，其夫既然才貌双全，官运亨通，不可能到四十岁才婚配。他若二十岁取妻，罗敷尚未出世；三十岁婚配，罗敷不足十岁，出嫁也不可能。四十岁前己婚，现在罗敷嫁给他，按年龄提算，只能是小妾。未婚和罗敷结合，则是老夫妻。作品开端描写罗敷在城南采桑时，竟倾到了所有的观者：“行者见罗敷，下担捋髭须；少年见罗敷，脱帽薯峭头耕者忘其犁，锄者忘其锄。”如此一位容华绝代的妙龄女郎嫁给了一个胡子拉茬的老头子（古代年龄概念与今天是有差别的，四十即可称“翁”），还在人前夸耀夫婿“四十专城居”，不但降底了身份，于己也十分不利。
我们说，真，是一切艺术的生命线，虚构也要合情合理，夸张过了头，就失去了真实性，也就削弱了艺术的感染力量。
当然，《陌上桑》就是全诗而言，确是汉乐府中一颗璀璨夺目的明珠，“四十专城居”云云，只是白璧微瑕而已
