众所周知，炼金术起源于埃及，最初是有人试图将贱金属伪造成贵金属，比如将铜和锌制成合金可以在外观和硬度上很接近黄金。
后来这种技术逐步发展成为一门学科，因为可能得到物质的转换，竟获得了神的地位，于是炼金术诞生了。
埃及人留给炼金术最重要的东西是《翠玉录》（Emerald Tablet），是刻在一块翡翠石板上的最早的炼金术典籍 希腊时期对炼金术最大的贡献，就是炼金术的哲学化。
古希腊著名的雅典学派在公元前4世纪左右建立了一套自然科学哲学体系，其代表人物有著名的苏格拉底、柏拉图和亚里士多德。
在这一时间对炼金术影响深远的“元素论”正式确立，即世间万物由四种元素组成：气、水、土、火；其中每种元素都代表四种基本特性（燥、湿、冷、热）中两种特性的组合。土=燥+冷；水=湿+冷；气=湿+热；火=燥+热。
这种思想为炼金术的物质转化理论提供了理论依据，可以说炼金术的主要思想就来源于这一时代。
这一时期实践炼金术也得到了蓬勃发展，大约公元1世纪，在亚历山大的炼金术士已经基本确立了炼金术实践的基本步骤：
原料—（黑化）→死物质—（转化）→产物
这就是后来炼金术“理解、分解、再构筑”思想的原型。
同时炼金术士们还提到了通过在“转化”中加入“种子”来完成转化的构想，我们认为这就是最早对“贤者之石”的追求。
但此时的“种子”和“贤者之石”的区别在于，炼金术士认为得到不同的产物需要不同的“种子”，比如得到黄金需要“黄金种子”，还没有产生一种“万能物质”的思想。
这个时代另一件对炼金术意义深远的改变就是炼金术符号的出现，这直接导致了庞杂的炼金术公式一定程度上的简化，同时也为炼成阵的出现打下了基础。
通常采用的炼金术符号最早是直接使用的占星术符号，如用太阳代表黄金，月亮代表银，后来又对其稍作改变，比如水银的蒸馏就是将水星的符号和蒸馏的符号结合，但不同的炼金术士通常使用不同的符号体系，使得炼金术符号曾一度混乱，直至近代化学确立，用化学符号替代了炼金术符号。
这一时期炼金术的成果主要用于制造合金和染料，这一时期制造的合金已经能在外观上与真金极其接近，以至于阿基米德为了鉴定叙拉古国王希耶隆二世金皇冠的真伪而发现了浮力定律。 炼金术：Alchemie 这个拉丁文单词就来源于阿拉伯语。更早的词源，很多人相信来自希伯来语的词组：Ki mi-Jah 意思是：上帝的启示。
西方世界在经历了短暂的文化繁荣之后，希腊衰落了。随着罗马的崛起，炼金术士不再具有之前的那种自由开放的研究气氛，以至于在相当长的一段时间处于停滞状态。
大约公元7世纪，阿拉伯世界崛起，并在接下来的300年内迅速攻灭了波斯，击败拜占庭，占领西班牙，俨然成了站在欧洲东方的强敌。
关于阿拉伯炼金术的起源，公认的第一个大师是大马士革的王子哈立德·伊本·亚连德（Khalid ibn Yazid）。这位王子大约生活在在公元7世纪中叶。历史记载哈立德王子是从一本名为《智者克拉索斯之书》开始炼金术的学习的。有趣的是，这位王子公认的老师却是一位拜占庭的基督教僧侣。从这个传说中，我们可以得出结论，阿拉伯世界的炼金术是由西方的基督教世界传入的。
大约在公元9世纪，扎比尔·伊本·海扬（Gabir ibn Hayyan）出现在阿拉伯炼金术大师名录中。史学界也存有争议，究竟是一位扎比尔，还是数位扎比尔（在传说中合为一人）共同带来了炼金术史上最深远的变革。从他（或者他们）开始，炼金术正式由一门“技术”变为一门“学问”。
扎比尔是伊斯兰教什叶派的一支——伊斯梅伊派（Ismailiya）的传人，这一派最大的特点就是坚信在世间经典中，存在着“真理背后的真理”。
扎比尔留下了炼金术历史上第一批传世的炼金术著作：《七十论》、《中和论》、《论同情》等。在这些著作中，我们终于发现上一讲提到过的那些希腊先哲的思想是怎样影响了炼金术的发展。在这些著作中，扎比尔详细地阐述了四态（冷热干湿）和四大元素（气水土火）的理论，并将其作为炼金术的基础理论。在继承希腊哲学思想的同时，扎比尔提出了炼金术中的“硫-汞”理论，认为世间一切金属都是由硫磺和水银组成的，只是因为组成的比例不同。通过炼金术调整金属中硫磺和水银的比例，就可以使之发生“嬗变”而由贱金属（铅）得到贵金属（金）。
扎比尔的著作中还屡次提到了“唯一之物”——“炼金药”或者叫“万用灵药”，具有诱发嬗变的能力。他同时叙述道：“世间万物皆来自哪个共同的源头，‘唯一之物’，又都能还原到那‘唯一之物’之中……”。“一即是全，全即为一”炼金术的箴言展示了宇宙的法则，这说明炼金术士已经由对黄金的追求转为了对宇宙的探索。
扎比尔还试图通过整理物质的性质，对物质进行分类。所以扎比尔又被后人称为：“化学之父”。
阿拉伯还有一位炼金术大师，虽然他更多的是一名医生，不过这使得他可以将生物学材料，比如草药和动物组织引入炼金术。他就是阿尔·拉齐（Ar-Razi）。他著有《秘密中的秘密》一书，继承了扎比尔的炼金术理论。从这部书中我们得知最晚在公元10世纪初，炼金术已经有一套自己专用的仪器和工具。他详细阐述了物质在炼金术中的转变过程，论述了在“嬗变”中加入炼金药是成败的关键之举。但可惜这位拉齐在历史上的记载实在太少，我们不能对他有更深入的了解了。 这一时期的早期，在西班牙，这个被阿拉伯人占领的基督教国家，处于阿拉伯和基督教夹缝中的犹太人开始了第一批翻译工作，不过由于他们并不是炼金术士，也不甚精通拉丁文，所以当时翻译的诸如《七十论》这样的着作的译文晦涩难懂，甚至完全失义。后来，基督教世界的一些学者开始接触炼金术，才正式宣告了炼金术欧洲时期的开启。
这第一位贤者就是大阿尔伯特（Albertus Mangus）（1193~1280），他一生留下了大约30部炼金术着作。他继承了扎比尔的硫-汞理论，同时提出了他的炼金术步骤：第一步是要“消灭特征”，将金属还原回纯粹的硫和汞，然后挖掘金属的潜力，使之重新融合，就得到了新的金属。在他的着作中，我们还找到了这样一段话：“但愿我们能得到那块既不能被火烧毁也不会腐坏的石头吧，然后我们将摆脱所有的恐惧。”这，就是“贤者之石”最早的书面记述。
接下来的第二位贤者是大阿尔伯特的学生，托马斯·冯·阿奎那（Thomas von Aquinas）（1225~1274），他继承了大阿尔伯特的思想，同时他认为水银是炼金术的“精神”，是纯粹的物质，从他开始，汞一直在炼金术中扮演着举足轻重的地位。他留下的炼金术着作最著名的是《论物种的多样性》，当然，这里的“物种”指的是“物质的种类”，而不是生物上的“物种”的意思。同时他还留下了两部神学着作《神学大全》和《旭日初升》。可正是由于这两部着作，在他死后第3年，也就是1277年，教皇宣布其为“异端”。因为所有人都相信，在他的着作中隐藏着“真理背后的真理”。
这第三位贤者，是罗杰·培根（Roger Bacon）（1214~1292），他的着作有《大着作》、《小着作》和《第三着作》。有人说他是欧洲自然哲学的先驱，因为他的主张是：任何学说都要有理论研究作为指导，再加上实践操作进行验证。他同时将这种思想引入炼金术，并宣称：“炼金术是诸多认识世界的方法之一。”正因为此，同样在1277年，教皇宣布其为巫师和“异端”，并判处入狱14年。
第四位贤者，是阿诺德·冯·威兰诺瓦（Arnaldus von Villanova）（1240~1311），着有《哲人的玫瑰园》。就像拉齐一样，威兰诺瓦更多的是一个医生。他认为就像人在四液不平衡时就会生病一样，贱金属就是由于四大元素和硫汞不平衡导致的一种病态现象，所以只需要平衡金属中的四大元素和硫汞的比例，就可以将其“治愈”，成为“健康”的贵金属。
最后一位先贤，是雷蒙德斯·卢勒（Raimundus Lullus）（1235~1316），他的着作是《大自然的奥秘之书：第五元素》。理论上炼金术只承认四大元素，所以这里的“第五元素”就是贤者之石。同时卢勒也是第一个试图将卡巴拉（Cabbala）引入炼金术理论的人，但是我们知道这一融合还要推迟到几百年以后才最终完成。
弗拉梅尔的炼金术——哲人石
尼古拉斯·弗拉梅尔（Nicolas Flamel）（1330~1417？）
他是唯一一个历史明确记载练成了哲人石的炼金术士。
1382年是奇迹发生的一年。1月17日中午，基于贤者之石的“汞——银”转化成功；4月25日下午5时，“汞——金”转化成功。
后来的故事就是弗拉梅尔成为世人皆知的一夜暴富。他先后捐建了14所医院，3所礼拜堂，7所教堂及其墓地，以及圣婴公墓那著名的壁画。
1417年3月，弗拉梅尔的葬礼举行。
1719年，保罗的书《土耳其之旅》在巴黎出版。其中一段他碰见一个奇怪的土耳其人，他对保罗说：“你真得相信他已经死了吗？不，我的朋友，尼古拉斯·弗拉梅尔还活着。无论是他还是他的妻子，都还不曾尝到死亡的滋味。”
1761年，塞缪在巴黎歌剧院的拱门下看到了弗拉梅尔夫妇。
1929年，在巴黎，路易·保威尔讲道一个酷似弗拉梅尔的老人。
这就是尼古拉斯·弗拉梅尔和贤者之石的故事。 这是中世纪的结束之时，从佛罗伦萨开始了一场席卷整个欧洲的思想变革：文艺复兴。文艺复兴颠覆了天主教告诉大家的世界，于是哲人们不得不寻求其它的途径来寻求世界的解释。一些人复兴了一度遭受封禁的亚里士多德主义——自然哲学主义，就像罗杰·培根宣扬的一样——另一些人开始试图重构柏拉图的思想，并由此产生了新柏拉图主义——形而上学和神秘主义的共同开端。
转回炼金术领域，这一思想上分歧也深刻地影响了炼金术的发展方向，我恐怕是由于赫尔墨斯主义和新柏拉图主义的气味相投，因而“赫尔墨斯的学说”——炼金术更多的接受了新柏拉图主义的影响。
几乎是在同时，犹太神秘主义的思想也开始进一步地渗透到了炼金术当中，尤以卡巴拉的传入为标志。炼金术士们开始利用卡巴拉的教义来理解世界。构建世界的卡巴拉之树，或者生命之树，被认为是上帝炼成世间万物的基石。
这一影响在炼金术士中最著名的表现者，就是人们所说的帕拉塞尔苏斯（Paracelsus）。原名菲利普斯·奥里欧勒斯·德奥弗拉斯特·博姆巴斯茨·冯·霍恩海姆（Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim）（1493~1541）。我不得不说这一个霍恩海姆有极端的自恋倾向。他给自己起得外号——帕拉塞尔苏斯——如果拆开来就是Para Celsus，意为“超越塞尔苏斯”，而塞尔苏斯是一位著名的古罗马医学着作家。霍恩海姆如同他的前辈拉齐和威兰诺瓦一样，同时是一个医生，我恐怕是因为当时解剖学的发展使得亚里士多德提出的“四液平衡理论”越来越站不住脚，于是帕拉塞尔苏斯在医学上抛弃了亚里士多德的学说，而这种抛弃同样延伸到了他的炼金术研究中，他放弃了亚里士多德主义而去坚决捍卫赫尔墨斯神秘主义和新柏拉图主义，他相信世间万物都具有灵魂，而最高的灵魂是整个宇宙。他在炼金术领域的成就，主要在于他对“硫-汞”体系的发展，他在这一体系中加入了一个新的元素：盐。同时他还对他的“盐-硫-汞”体系做出了全新的定义：盐是肉体，硫是灵魂，汞是精神，这三基构成了世间万物。
很快，霍恩海姆的追随者出现了，他们更加坚定地推崇赫尔墨斯神秘主义和新柏拉图主义的思想。传言是一名叫做克里斯蒂安·罗森克罗伊茨（Christian Rosenkreutz）的德国修道士创建了这个被称为玫瑰十字会（Fraternity of the Rosy Cross）神秘组织，作为帕拉塞尔苏斯学派和赫尔墨斯主义的传承者的秘密社团，已知的成员有：佩特努斯·西弗瑞勒斯（Petrus Severinus），丹麦国王御医，着有《哲学医学的观念》；约瑟夫·迪歇纳（Joseph Duchesne），法国国王御医，着有《论古代哲学家的旧医药学原料》；利奥纳特·特恩内瑟尔·扎姆·特恩（Leonhardt Thurneysser zum Thurn），勃兰登堡选帝侯御医，着有《第五元素》；托马斯·蒂姆（Thomas Thymme），英国作家，着有《迪歇纳的化学医学和赫尔墨斯医学实践》；吉拉德·多恩（Gerad Dorn），德国炼金术士；琼·巴普提斯塔·梵·海尔蒙特（Joan Baptista van Helmont），炼金术士、医生，着有《医学的曙光》；巴西尔·瓦伦丁（Basil Valentine），炼金术士，着有《锑之凯旋车》、《十二把钥匙》……显然，我不知道这个名单还有多长，名单上的很多人选择了隐去自己的真名实姓，而冠以一个统一的名号：玫瑰十字会员（Rosicrucian）。
但是，同样还有一部分炼金术士仍然在坚持亚里士多德的自然哲学，这种坚持及其引发的炼金术士们对物质、对世界的思考，最终导致了一个伟大的炼金术时代的终结。 艾萨克·牛顿爵士（Sir Isaac Newton）（1643~1727）显然是人尽皆知的最典型的科学家的代表。恐怕牛顿对神秘学才有更深的追求，他有一句被世人选择性遗忘的名言：“我的一生，就是在为证明上帝的存在而工作。”
事实上，牛顿接触炼金术甚至比他接触科学还要早，他幼年就曾大量阅读亚里士多德的著作，并对其元素论十分感兴趣，而众所周知亚里士多德的元素论就是炼金术的基础理论之一。在进入剑桥学习的时候，他的第一位导师就是一名炼金术士亨利·莫尔（Henry More，著有《灵魂不朽》）。
牛顿的手稿表明，它曾逐字逐句誊写和翻译了许多炼金术著作，同时还编辑了一份详细的，大约包含7000个名词的炼金术词汇表。在他的手稿中，他将他拉丁文名字Iasscus Neuutonus通过一种古老的换音造词法改写为Jeova Sanctus Unus，意为“神选之子”。
牛顿曾进行过大量的炼金术实验，其中包括参照瓦伦丁《锑之凯旋车》中的方法，成功制造出了一种被称为“星锑”的美丽晶体，并认为“这种星没有宝贵到包含贤者之石，但是其中隐藏着一种绝妙的药物”。
他观察炼金术坩埚中物质的运动，从炼金术的动力上，他认为之所以天体会具有引力这一奇妙的性质，正是因为我们的宇宙正是身处于上帝的巨大而奇妙的坩埚之中，炼金术就是推动我们世界运行的本源动力。换言之，如果没有牛顿对炼金术的研究，就没有万有引力，甚至我们可以说牛顿的科学成就只是他研究炼金术的副产品而已。
在牛顿之后，炼金术并未消亡，可是牛顿是最后一个对炼金术理论作出过贡献的炼金术士，所以我们称其为“最后一位贤者”。
罗伯特·波义耳（Robert Boyle）（1627~1691），牛顿在剑桥的导师兼同事，于1661年发表了《怀疑派化学家》。波义耳在本书中提出了新的元素论：只有那些不能用化学方法再分解的简单物质才是元素。这正是现在出现在我们的化学教材中关于元素的定义的最早版本。他同时还提出：“化学，为了完成其光荣而又庄严的使命，必须抛弃古代传统的思辨方法，而像物理学那样，立足于严密的实验基础之上。”这就完全去除了炼金术中的神秘学思想，而将自然哲学思想独立出来一门新的学科：近代化学。波义耳也由此被称为“近代化学之父”。
自此，炼金术发生了有史以来最严重的分裂，失去了自然哲学思想的炼金术从此完全被归为神秘学的范畴之内。 18世纪，资产阶级革命席卷全世界，整个西方社会的价值观发生了根本的改变，拜金主义充斥着整个世界，上层社会的人们都陷入了对金钱无休无止的追求中，完全无暇顾及那些古老的文化。
炼金术似乎就要这场忙碌中被人们淡忘了。
但是到了18世纪末19世纪初，资本家们，或者说最早的那批拜金主义者的后代们，发现似乎这世界上存在着比金钱更重要的东西，于是一股说普遍的猎奇思想子在当时散播开来
在这一时期，为了满足这种猎奇思想，一些人开始寻求古老的，神秘的东西，来满足大众的好奇心。
美国人亚瑟·爱德华·韦特（Arthur Edward Waite）（1857~1942）便是这些人中最著名的一个。他翻译并创作了大量的神秘学著作，他向世人介绍了卡巴拉和犹太神秘主义，他还详细描述了玫瑰十字会，并将古代炼金术的一些著作翻译出来。当然，韦特为世人所知最重要的还是他将吉普赛人的占卜纸牌中融合了神秘主义的思想，并设计出了任何一个玩塔罗牌的人都不可能不知道的“韦特经典塔罗”。
于是如今的炼金术就扮演着这样一个角色：
无论是尼古拉斯·弗拉梅尔，还是牛顿的炼金术研究，就像失落的亚特兰蒂斯城或者UFO一样，都是猎奇者绝妙的谈资，以及小说家和电影人经久不衰的赚钱法宝，不是么？ 炼金术在中国古代叫炼丹术。中国在秦始皇统一六国之后，曾派人到海上求仙人不死之药。汉武帝本人就热衷于神仙和长生不死之药。到了东汉炼丹术得到发展，出现了著名的炼丹术家魏伯阳，著书《周易参同契》以阐明长生不死之说。继后，晋代炼丹家陶弘景著《真诰》。到了唐代，炼丹术跟道教结合起来而进入全盛时期，这时炼丹术家孙思邈，著作《丹房诀要》。这些炼丹术著作都有不少化学知识，据统计共有化学药物六十多种，还有许多关于化学变化的记载。
