2．建筑形体：江南园林建筑从外观造型，立面形式到细部装饰处理，远比北方的轻巧，纤细，玲珑剔透，其建筑空间既满足生活居住需求，又作为感情生发和延续场所，布置按“风水风骨，量体裁衣，烘云托日”去提高自然山水的艺术感染。诸如虚心高节的修竹，疏影横斜的梅花，出淤泥而不染的荷花等植物，均为烘托主题和寄托情感而设。
3．尺度空间：江南园林空间开阔通透，内外相互穿插渗透，景中套景，层次变化十分丰富。
4．建筑色彩：江南园林淡雅朴素，几乎所有建筑色彩都以白粉墙、青灰瓦、深棕色或深绿的木构装修组成，与北方形成鲜明对比。这与地方气候密切相关，灰瓦白墙配以周围的山水绿化，给人以清新幽雅，凉爽宁静的感觉，在心理上减弱了酷热导致的不适。
北方园林
中国历史悠久，黄河流域几千年前的生态环境与现在大不一样，那时有大片厚实的植被，
水土保持较好，中华民族的先民在古代创造出灿烂的文明。
以黄河流域为主体的北方园林系统发源很早，规模很大，与以长江流域为主体的南方园林系统互有影响。历代都以黄河流域文化作为中国文化的“正统”。
早在周代，周文王就曾大兴土木，修建苑囿，筑了灵台。《诗·大雅·灵台》记载灵台养了很多动物：“王在灵囿， 鹿攸伏， 鹿濯濯，白鸟 。王在灵沼，放 鱼跃。”文王在灵台游览 ，看见母鹿在悠闲的散步，白鹤昂立，鱼儿畅游，感到心旷神怡。周代的灵囿以素朴为特征 。
当时规定了修建苑囿的等级，天子百里，诸侯四十里，诸侯不得超过天子的一半。《周礼·地官》记载有“囿人”，“掌囿游之兽禁”。灵台到底有多大，现在还难以考证清楚。
修建灵台不仅仅供游览，更重要的意义在于政治文化作用。汉代郑玄在《诗·灵台笺》中说：“天子有灵台者，所以观 象，察气之妖祥也。文王受命而作邑于丰，立灵台。”周文王修灵台，与民众同娱乐，收到很好的效果。《孟子·梁惠王上》称赞说：“文王以民力为台为沼，而民欢乐之，谓其台曰灵台，谓其沼曰灵沼，乐其有麋鹿鱼鳖。古之人与民 偕乐，故能乐也。”商周时期，独特的建筑体系已初步形成，如夯土台基、木构架、斗拱和院落式组合，以及对称步局，均已出现。这些形式、技术已运用于园林中。
秦始皇在位时，以天人感应观念决定国家事务。不论是修阿房宫和骊山墓，还是出巡天下，都要参照天地的“玄和”。天人神学笼罩秦朝。
秦朝在咸阳的北阪大修宫殿，泾渭沿岸楼阁相连接。秦始皇认为原有的咸阳宫太小，下令在丰(周文王都城)、镐(周武王都城)之间建筑大型宫殿。《史记·秦始皇本纪》记载：“先作前殿阿房，东西五百步，南北五十丈，上可以坐万人，下可以建五丈旗 。周驰为阁道，自 殿下直抵南山。表南山之巅以为阙。为复道，自阿房渡渭，属之咸阳，以象天极阁道绝汉抵 营室也。”在庞大的宫殿群中，“关中计宫三百，关外四百余。”唐朝诗人杜牧在《阿房宫 赋》中说：“蜀山兀，阿房出。”揭示了因阿房宫而付出的代价——砍光了蜀山。
秦始皇多次巡游天下，到名山大川祭祀天地。如公元前219年封禅泰山，立石颂德；又到彭城，派上千人到泗水寻找周鼎；又到楚地，“浮江，至湘山祠，逢大风，几不得渡。上问博士 曰；‘湘君何神？’多博士对曰：‘闻之，尧女，舜之妻，而葬此。’于是始皇怒，使刑徒三千人皆 伐湘 山树，赭其山。”�秦始皇巡游天下，从今山东临海处观海，远处的海雾中似有仙山琼阁，于是听信方士徐 福等人的媚言，以为海中有三神山，可以求得长生不老之药，遂“发童男女数千人，入海求仙”，结果有去无回。
秦始皇生前修筑了奢侈的地下宫殿，“穿三泉，下铜而致椁，宫观百官奇器珍怪徙藏满 之。令匠作机弩矢，有所穿近者辄射之。以水银为百川江河大海，机相灌输，上具天文，下具地旧。”这就是至今仍未发掘的骊山墓，千古一帝秦始皇就埋葬在里面。现在供游人参观的世界第八大奇观兵马俑只是骊山墓的一个随葬坑中出土的。
汉代，在圃的基础上，出现大型园林苑。汉武帝在位时间很长，倾尽国力修建上林苑， 周围300里，地跨5县，苑内有16座苑，苑中养有飞禽走兽，供帝王狩猎。苑中有20座宫，建章宫是 其中最大的宫城。苑中有35座观，至于亭、台，则不可计数。上林苑最突出的特征是形成了“一池三 山”的宫廷园林格局。汉代文献说“其北治大池，渐台高二十余丈，名曰太液池，中有蓬莱、方丈、流洲，壶梁象海中神山、龟鱼之属。”司马相如有《上林赋》说“离宫别馆，弥山跨谷，高廊四注，重坐曲阁。”苑址在今陕西西安一带，今已荡然无存。 �汉代的王侯贵族之家也兴造私人宅园。茂陵富人袁广汉在北邙山下采石筑园，园中有建筑群。
东汉桓帝时大将军梁冀在兴造住宅时，“广开园圃，采土筑山，十里九坂，以象二崤，深林绝涧，有若自然，奇禽驯兽，飞走其间。”�由此可见，秦汉时代已经有了山水园林，当时的宫廷园林具有极大的气势，占地广，建 筑物多，园中可游可狩，由此可见封建贵族的奢侈至极。
魏晋南北朝时期，社会急剧动荡，群雄蜂起，人口流徙，但是，兴修园林的风气有增无减。魏明帝大修宫殿。《三国志·高堂隆传》记载“帝愈增崇宫殿，雕饰观阁，凿太行之 石 英，采谷城之文石，起景阳山于芳林之园，建昭阳殿于太极之北，铸作黄龙凤凰奇伟之兽，饰金塘、陵云台、陵霄阙。百役繁兴，作者万数，公卿以下至于学生，莫不展力，帝乃躬自掘上以率之。”可见当时的帝苑规模很大，而且从皇帝到臣子都参与园林劳动。
晋朝时，北方有一些秀美的园林。《金谷诗序》记载大富翁石崇“有别庐在河南县界 金谷涧中，去城十里，或高或下，有清泉茂林，众果竹柏药草之属，金田十顷，羊二百口，鸡猪鹅鸭之灯，莫不毕备。”园中宅舍有清泉环绕，林木万株，鱼翔池沼。 �西晋羊祜性好自然，自造景观。《晋书·羊祜传》记载“祜乐山水，每风景，必造岘 山，置酒言咏，终日不倦。”北朝有养鹿的风气。《太平御览》卷九�六记载：后秦国君姚兴(公元394至416年在位） 在国都徽音殿西南“起波若台，有逍遥园，西去三百步有鹿子苑，羌王养糜鹿数百头。”十六国时，后燕帝慕容熙在平城（今大同）筑龙腾苑，广袤十几里，苑内堆筑的景云 高峰17丈。
这时，黄河流域再现了大量的佛寺丛林，不仅城内有，山村也有，庙宇园林具有宗教 氛围。自然景观与宗教人文融合，宗教意识对造园思想有一定的影响。出世观念促成了人们 陶醉于园林之中。
寺庙园林化，在北朝时期很突出。北朝人杨 之在《洛阳伽蓝记》中有多处记载，如描 述景明寺说：“前望嵩山、少室，却负帝城，青林垂影。绿水为文，形胜之地，爽垲独美。……房篁之外，皆是山池，竹松兰芒，垂列楷挥。含风团露，流香吐葫。”描述景林寺又是一番景象：“寺西有园，多绕奇果。春鸟秋蝉，鸣声相续。中有蝉房一所，内置抵洹精舍，形制虽小，巧构难比，加以禅阁虚静，隐室凝邃，嘉树夹牖，芳杜匝阶，虽云朝市，想同岩谷。”�禅房周围如同山野佳境，这为静寂的修炼者提供了超脱世俗的场所，似乎使僧道之人更能出神入化。
北朝流行自然山水园，人们由利用自然环境发展到刻意模仿自然环境，由粗略地模仿山 水转到用写实的手法再现山水。如北魏张伦在园内“造景阳山，有若自然。”茹皓营建华林园“经构楼馆，列于上下。树草栽木，颇有野致。”园林不再拘泥于秦汉时的建筑物连属，而是顺山水之自然，上下点缀成足。
隋朝在洛阳营建宫殿苑圃，其中的西苑以湖、渠水系为主体，将宫苑建筑融于山水之中 。湖中有蓬莱、方丈、瀛洲诸山。湖北有龙鳞渠，沿渠造有16组庭园。每园临渠开门，园中又有亭池 。汉代宫苑是以周阁复道相连，西苑的庭园很自然地分布在山水间，这是自然主义观点的表现。
唐朝是中国封建社会的一个鼎盛时期，强大的国力为宫廷园林的建造提供了保证。长安城的宫苑十分壮观，太液池仍然具有“一池三山”的气势。长安城外有许多离宫别苑，如九成宫、华清宫都是优美的园林。长安城东南隅的芙蓉园、曲江池改变了封闭形式，定时向民众开放。
唐宋时期的私家园林有两种趋向：�其一是在山川乡野建园林。一批自由而潇洒的文人远离市井，到大自然中去营建安身立 命之寓。如王维在蓝田县经营辋川别业，他在《辋川集》中讲述了怎样利用自然条件布置景点 ，怎样构筑亭馆，怎样欣赏山水植物之美。王维擅长诗、画，他的诗中有画，画中有诗，他的园林鉴赏观具有诗画气质。
其二是在市井造作写意山水园。限于各种原因，一些士大夫只能在市井居住，但他们又 向往山水园林，于是在城内置地造园，他们掇山理水，修建亭台，栽种树木，实现自然之趣。宋代李格非在《洛阳名园记》中记载了唐代迄宋的园林，如司马光在洛阳建独乐园，有钓鱼庵、采药圃、见山台，皆成“城市山林。”
宋代在开封建有艮岳，这是历史上很著名的规模宏大的宫廷园林，园中山水兼胜，楼阁 布列，花木成景，成为典型的山水宫苑。
隋、唐、宋的园林特征表现为：①朝廷乐于兴建大型宫廷园林，隋有西苑，唐有太液池 ，宋有艮岳。②私家园林突出写意，以画意、诗意融人园林，城内盛行写意山水园。③有了专门的园林游记，如《洛阳名园记》等。
逮及元明清三代，封建社会的园林艺术达到极致。朝廷大力营建北京的宫廷园林，以人工挖湖堆山，形成了西苑三海（北海、中海、南海）、圆明园。以利用自然山水加以改造形成 了颐和园、避暑山庄，园林布置了气势弘大的建筑，并且吸收了南方园林的精华。
概言之，北方园林有以下特点：
其一，北方园林以宫廷园林为代表。既然是朝廷修建的园林，那么，在人力、物力、财 力、智力诸方面都是倾国而为之。并且，宫廷园林必然讲究帝王气派，雄伟高大、金碧辉煌，主体突出，强调中心。所有的宫廷园林都占地较广，平面布局严谨，壮阔粗旷，厚重沉稳。
其二，北方园林受南方影响。清代康熙帝、乾隆帝南巡，喜好南方园林，把南方工匠招 到京城造园。北方人也自觉地学习南方园林。京城的园林实际上是全国园林的集锦，集全国名园之大成。如：�圆明园仿照了杭州的“断桥残雪”、“柳浪闻鸳”、“平湖秋月”、“雷峰夕照”、 “ 三潭印月”、“曲院风荷”；圆明园还仿照了苏州的“狮子林”。其文源阁仿照了宁波的天一阁，四宜书房仿照了海宁安阑园。
熙和园仿照了杭州西湖，二者的堤、桥、岛都有异曲同工之妙。
承德避暑山庄的烟雨楼仿照了嘉兴南湖，小金山仿照了镇江的金山，芝经云堤仿照了杭州苏堤。
其三，北方园林有四合院基调。四合院是北方普遍的民居形式，贵族的四合院都是带 花园的。北京故宫的御花园，实际上是四合院花园的放大。前海西街的恭王府花园是研究北 方私家花园的活教材。
