全面培养学生自身综合素质应从以下几个方面的内容入手：
1. 思想道德素质
从近几年人才市场和就业形势反馈的信息看，很多用人单位选人重才更重德, 把思想道德素质放在首位，政治思想素质较高，具有事业心、责任感和吃苦奉献精神的毕业生成了首选目标。思想道德素质包括政治素质、事业心和责任感、艰苦奋斗精神和务实作风等方面。(1) 较高的政治素质。政治素质不仅表现在政治立场、观念方面的远见和洞察力，还表现为对社会发展趋势的敏锐性，对国家宏观政策的预测把握能力及具有一定的政治理论修养。(2) 事业心和责任感。许多用人单位在人才的要求上强调要有事业心、责任感，要爱岗敬业、乐于奉献。希望并要求毕业生把选择的工作当作长期追求、投入的事业，要与单位同甘苦，共患难，荣辱与共，而不仅仅是赚钱谋生的职业和临时落脚点。惟有敬业的大学生才能积极进取、胸怀大志，才能开发蕴藏在自己身上潜在的创造性，为社会作出贡献，实现自己的人生价值。(3) 艰苦奋斗精神和务实作风。这是创业者应有的精神风貌，在改革开放和现代化建设中，会遇到无数的艰难险阻，也难免有这样那样的曲折和坎坷，这就需要毕业生始终保持昂扬的斗志和坚韧不拔的作风，坚定不移地朝着既定的奋斗目标前进。用人单位需要的是干才，能踏踏实实工作，有吃苦精神，而不是好高骛远、眼高手低。
2. 科学文化素质
在现代科学技术突飞猛进、生产的发展越来越多地依靠人的智力和知识的今天，劳动者科学文化素质的高低，对生产的发展、社会的进步有着决定性的影响。(1) 要有广博精深的知识贮备。现代社会对从业人员的文化素质、知识结构的要求愈来愈多，对知识技能共性的要求愈来愈多，不仅要具备宽厚扎实的基础知识，还必须具有广博精深的专业知识和大容量的新知识储备，要求从业者的知识程度高、内容新、实用性强。(2) 要建立合理的知识结构。就是要做到围绕自己选择的就业目标，对自己所掌握的知识进行合理组合、恰当调配、形成知识系统。(3) 要有更新知识的能力。即持续学习、终身学习的能力。(4) 要有创新能力。人类社会的不断进步的过程，就是一个不断创新的过程。在以高新技术产业为支柱的知识经济时代，创新意识、创新精神、创新能力更是衡量新型人才的重要标志。当前，在社会就业总需求不足的情况下，大学生一味地指望找到一个理想的就业位置已不太现实，社会迫切需要有一大批大学生利用自己的学识自主创业，也为他人创造出更多的就业位置。有不少大学已开始意识到培养大学生的创业精神和创新能力的重要性，鼓励毕业生自主创业、艰苦创业、科技创业。
3. 身体、心理素质
健康的体魄、良好的身体素质已成为人才竞争的物质资本。人们普遍认为德、才、学、识、体是人才的内在因素，而体是最基本的东西，是成长、成才的物质基础。同时, 在社会急剧变革的今天，多种思想文化的激荡，新旧价值观念的冲突、激烈的竞争、物质生活的悬殊，社会生活和经济生活不协调等，无不冲击青年学生的心灵，引起了部分学生认知失调、心理失衡和行为失范。这都影响了毕业生的学习、生活和工作，也不利于就业求职。因而大学生必须加强心性修养，提高心理素质，要能正确评价自我，胸襟开阔、豁达大度、积极乐观；要正确对待挫折，克服期望值过高的心理，培养坚韧不拔的毅力；要克服自卑感，增强自信心，培养心理调试能力，以良好的心理素质去迎接挑战。
知识是形成素质的基础，高素质人才必然有扎实的专业基础，这里所说的专业基础是全面的，全面的专业基础应是指融自然学科和人文学科于一体的广博的学科基础知识，一个人只有具备了融会贯通的综合知识结构，才能透彻地研究高深学问，这本身就是一种素质。精神是素质的内在本质。大学生的专业理想和生活理想必须遵循政治和道德的规范，没有政治和道德的专业理想和生活理想是社会和人所处的群体不能容许的。崇高的理想和信念是形成科学的世界观、人生观、价值观的基础，坚定的政治目标可以激发人无穷的奋斗精神，无私奉献是精神的最高形式。能力是综合素质的表现。素质高必能力强，在一定意义上讲，能力是衡量素质的一项重要指标。一个人的才能与从事的活动的关系表现在，如果人的才能与活动要求相符，并具有较高水平的，从事某种活动时就可以得心应手、游刃有余、事半功倍；反之，才疏学浅、能力较差的人，做事就会感到力不从心，事倍功半。能力的提高，离不开知识的吸收，但决不是知识的堆砌，而在于知识的运用。
大学生在培养自身综合素质过程中可以从提高以下几方面的能力入手：(1) 充分的表达能力。包括口头表达能力、文字表达能力、数字表达能力，图示表达能力等几种形式在内的准确性、鲜明性和生动性。(2) 完善社会交往能力。学生步入社会，能像一个社会活动家一样，正确、有效在处理协调好职业生活中人与人的各种关系。(3) 初具组织管理能力。要求大学生必须能从全局的角度加以协调处理好工作中涉及日常的行政、业务工作的各个环节，从千头万绪、具体繁杂的工作中有条不紊，同时还具备一定的领导能力。(4) 做出正确决断的能力。良好的决断能力可以实现对目标及其实现手段的最佳选择。(5)沉着解决问题的能力。包括应变能力和适应能力、操作能力及策划能力。大学生要有耐心、有毅力、有很好的应变能力，做到急而能安、缓而不缀，既忍让又不失原则，沉着冷静、灵活应变地处理问题；适应能力是其素质、能力的综合反映，要求大学生对社会、对环境的适应，是主动的、积极的适应，不是消极的等待和对困难的屈服，更不是对落后、消极现象的认同，甚至同流合污。适应要同发展结合起来，要同改造联系起来；实际操作能力是人的智力转化为物质力量的凭借，是专业工作者必须具备的一种实践能力。实际动手能力的强弱，将直接影响到作用的发挥；策划能力要求大学生在日常工作中，抓住有利时机，把握有效空间，筹办和开展形式各异的介绍宣传和业务活动，使工作富有感召力和吸引力。(6) 锻炼自控能力。遇到不顺的事能否压下心头的怒气，冷静处理，是对大学生素质高低的一种考验, 避免因小事而引起大错，导致工作的失误。素质发展的创新性要求，是当代人才素质发展的基本方向和核心要素。创新能力的培养，是社会发展的客观需要，也是人立足于现实的必备素质。包含多方面的内容，如强烈的好奇心，细致的观察力，深刻的洞察力,超前的预测力，大胆设想勇于探索的精神以及提出问题、研究问题、解决问题的能力等。素质发展的个性化要求，是在强调全面发展的同时，也要注重人的个性张扬，就业竞争日益激烈，迫切需要当代大学生强化自我竞争意识，并根据社会的需要和个性特点，努力挖掘个人潜力，不断完善自己的个性和发展个人素质。
机遇总是垂青于有准备的人，一个人综合素质的高低，将决定他求职择业的层次与自由度。而综合素质的提高, 不是一朝一夕就能做到的，也不是靠毕业前的突击武装能解决的。它要求大学生要转变观念，增强竞争意识，在整个大学期间，按高要求有针对性、分阶段地不断充实自己、完善自己，逐步提高自身的综合素质，成为择业竞争中的强手
随着经济发展的快速，科学技术的进步，使得中国——这个本已人口众多的国家的社会竞争愈来愈激烈，竞争是残酷的，让每个人都活在了一个优胜劣汰的社会之中，来自生活的各种无形压力使我们背得喘不过气来，令我们恐惧，这些与日俱增的压力形成我们堕落的思想，无心去工作、学习，以致于工作样样不顺心，成绩一落千丈，多少人为此而苦闷、压抑，放弃了自己的理想、目标，甚至觉得世界不需要他，而为此产生轻生的念头，这不都是竞争犯的错，压力惹的祸吗？
