海底表面还蕴藏着制造磷肥的磷钙石，储量可达3000多亿吨。如开发出来，可供全世界使用几百年，海底岩层中还有丰富的铁、煤、硫和岩盐等矿藏。
石油是最宝贵的燃料。目前已探知的海底石油就已有1350亿吨，占世界可开采石油的45％。我国近海、波斯湾沿海、北海等近海地区的储量最大。
在全球135亿亿吨的海水中，溶存着80多种元素，可提取5亿亿吨盐，3100万亿吨镁，3050万亿吨硫，660万亿吨钙，620万亿吨钾，12万亿吨锶，7万亿吨硼。此外，还有锂、鉫、铀、铜等元素。
20世纪80年代以来，又发现了海底热液矿藏，总体积约3932万立方米，是金、银等贵金属的又一来源。因而，它又被称为“海底金银库”。
波涛汹涌的海水，永不停息地运动着。其中潜藏着无尽的能量。海水不枯竭，这能量就用不完，因此海水是可再生能源。全部海洋能大约有1528亿千瓦，这种能量比地球上全部动植物生长所需要的能量还要大几百倍。可以说，海洋是永不枯竭的电力来源。
