这部电影主要讲述的是富商的女儿艾米莉、西恩和西恩的舞团的成员团结起来，捍卫并实现他们的梦想的故事。而在现实中，每个人都在为着自己的梦想、兴趣、爱好而生活。也因此感到压抑、焦虑、以及不安。
狂舞团成立最初只是为了让更多的人知道，这个城市也是属于贫民窟的，还有一群小伙子也同样是最棒的。但当他们通过一个互联网的比赛推广自己时，却忘了自己的初衷，最后只是为了比赛而狂舞了。而回归生活，我们忙碌的初衷是什么？电影里总是在说，要打破一切常规。我觉得，年轻的时候，当然要做一些不可思议的事情。
爱情第一次成为了《舞出我人生》系列的主线，所以在独舞的片段里，导演更加侧重于情绪的表达而不是夸张的肢体动作。影片中穿插了艾米和肖恩的爱情故事，这不是灰姑娘的童话，却是一个穷小子的励志故事。
