我国铜矿床的基本特点是：
1.铜矿床分布广泛
除天津市、重庆市和香港特区外，全国各省、市、自治区都探明有数量不等的铜金属储量（表1-2，图1-1）。探明铜储量占全国探明总储量10%以上的有江西、云南和西藏等三省区，其中江西省最多，探明储量占全国探明总储量的19.64%；在地区上，长江中下游、藏东、川滇、甘肃金川和白银等5个片区中，分布了全国铜储量约73%，而长江中下游地区独占了34%。
2.单个铜矿床的规模以小型为主
我国单个矿床铜金属储量50万吨以上的大型矿床只有34个，探明铜储量占全部铜储量的57.6%。其中只有江西德兴铜厂和西藏玉龙两个斑岩型铜矿的铜储量超过500万吨，从世界标准来看，我国迄今为止尚未找到千万吨级的特大型铜矿床。按矿床类型分，单个矿床规模超过50万吨的斑岩型有11个，接触交代型的有9个，海相火山气液型和热液型各有4个，受变质型2个，岩浆熔离型2个，海相沉积型2个。小型铜矿床有700多个，其铜储量总计仅占全国总储量的13.44%。
3.铜矿床类型多、成因复杂
一个矿床的形成往往经历过几种不同的成矿作用。由于研究者对一个矿床的成矿作用的了解程度不同或侧重点不同，因而对经过多种成矿作用的矿床有不同的成因解释。为便于对比，对一个具体矿床的成因归类，只能以一种主要成因为代表。据此，我国已知铜矿床的成因类型大体可划分为岩浆熔离型铜镍硫化物矿、斑岩型、接触交代型、海相火山气液型、陆相火山气液型、热液型、海相沉积型、陆相沉积型、受变质型和表生型等10种。其中以斑岩型为最重要，探明铜储量占全国探明总储量的35.53%，其次为接触交代型，探明铜储量约占25.32%。海相气液型约占9.24%，热液型约占8.25%，岩浆熔离型5.67%，海相沉积型占5.16%，受变质型占3.82%，陆相火山气液型占3.21%。
4.矿石类型多样化
矿石类型可分为以铜为主的铜矿石、与其他元素共生的铜矿石和在非铜矿石中呈伴生状态的伴生铜矿石。以铜为主的铜矿石是主要的，占全部铜储量的83%。特别是大中型铜矿，其储量占整个以铜为主储量的86%。其他矿种矿床中伴生的铜储量仅占全部铜储量的3.9%。铜矿的含铜品位以中低品位为主，大于1%品位的富铜矿仅占全部探明储量的33%；铜品位大于0.5%、小于1.0%的约占4 7%。
5.铜矿石中伴生的可综合利用的元素多
我国铜矿石中除主要组分Cu外，常伴生有Au、Ag、Mo、Fe、Ni、Co、W、Sn、Pb、Zn等。据统计，与铜伴生的金，占了整个伴生金储量的78%，伴生银储量占整个伴生银储量的26%。不同成因类型铜矿往往具不同的元素组合。如斑岩型铜矿以Cu-Mo为主，次为Cu-Au；接触交代型铜矿以伴生Cu-Fe、Cu-Au-S、Cu-Fe-Co以及Cu-Pb-Zn等；岩浆熔离型铜矿为Cu-Ni组合为主；陆相沉积型铜矿有Cu—Ag组合。与铜矿伴生的组分具有很重要的综合利用价值。
6.铜矿床的成矿时代多
我国铜矿的成矿时代从太古宙到第四纪各个时期都有，但主要是在燕山期，其探明铜储量占全部铜储量约51%；其次为元古宙约占17.9%，喜马拉雅期约占12.7%；华力西期约占9.6%；加里东期约占4.4%；太古宙约占3.9%。各个时代有不同的主要成因类型。太古宙以斑岩型和海相火山气液型为主；元古宙以海相沉积型和海相火山气液型为主；加里东期主要为海相火山气液型；华力西期以海相火山气液型和斑岩型为主；燕山期则以斑岩型和接触交代型最重要；喜马拉雅期主要为斑岩型。
