第一代军装：中山装八角帽
我军建军始自1927年“八一”南昌起义，当时这支部队穿的是国民革命军的服装，只是加系红领巾予以区别；湘赣边区的秋收起义部队多着工农服装，佩戴红布袖章。
由于不断有人加入红军部队，而当时红军服装主要依靠打土豪和战场上缴获而来，因此，新入伍的战士，往往是遇上什么穿什么，颜色和式样都很杂乱。
1928年红军利用战场缴获的几架缝纫机在江西宁冈挑寮村的一座破庙里建立起自己的第一所被装厂，也就是说，这时起红军才开始有了自己的制式服装。
这一时期红军的服装样式是用粗布做成的灰色中山装、八角帽，缀以布质的红五星帽徽和红领章。
当总司令朱德看到部队官兵换上被装厂生产的第一批统一制式军服时十分高兴，他意味深长地说：“它虽然没有外国军装那么漂亮，但对我们来说，可真是其好无比了。”
当时服装厂的生产条件很艰苦，做衣服的白土布是用灰靛染色，有时连灰靛也没有，只好用茶籽壳(稻草灰等土办法来着色，缝衣线也是工人自制的萱麻线)。
大多数中年以上的中国人都还会记得毛泽东那张头戴八角帽的半身照片。那份英气给多少人留下深刻的印象，而八角帽和中山装军服又使多少人心中的红军形象更加清晰！
自己动手的服装
在艰难岁月里——自己动手
1937年，抗日战争全面爆发，共产党与国民党再度合作，中国工农红军主力部队和南方红军游击队分别改编为八路军和新四军，服装与国民党军队的服装相同，仅以左臂佩戴“八路军”、“新四军”臂章以示区别。
1941年“皖南事变”后，八路军和新四军部队取消了帽子上的青天白日徽。
国民党对毛泽东领导的部队所在地实行经济封锁，数万部队官兵衣食处于极度匮乏之中。在这种情况下，毛泽东号召“自己动手，丰衣足食”，全军掀起轰轰烈烈的大生产运动，战士们自己纺线、织布、染布、做军鞋。
根据地的广大妇女也大张旗鼓地做衣、做鞋支援红军。前方、后方团结一致，依靠坚忍不拔的意志克服了种种困难，基本上保证了军服的供给。
在整个抗日战争和解放战争初期，军服的变化不大。多在小的标识上做些改动。
40年代后期，我军正式命名为”中国人民解放军”，全军统一把草绿色确定为军服的颜色，帽子改为有一个小帽檐的解放帽，左胸佩戴“中国人民解放军”胸章。
统一服装样式和色彩
这是我军历史上的第一次统一服装样式和色彩。
1949年新中国成立后，我军由原来的单一军种发展为陆、海、空三大军种。
从这时开始，中国军队的军服发生了一系列重大变化，第一次出现了大檐帽、士兵套头衫和女军人连衣裙，以及“列宁装”(胸前双排扣)。海军则采用世界通行的海魂衫和套头军服，无檐帽上缀有两根辨风向的飘带，等等。空军、海军、装甲兵等技术兵种也都有了自己的专业特种服装。
从这时起，中国军服离开中山装的单一模式，吸收了外国军服的某些特点。军服中的极品——元帅服
1955年我军实行军衔制，服装开始分出礼服、常服等等，首次突破了单一制式军服的历史。
军服中的极品
这时期元帅服成为军服中的极品。
解放军十大元帅礼服虽然成为当时群众心目中无比尊贵的形象，但毛泽东却始终拒穿大元帅服。
军衔制实行时，曾计划设置中华人民共和国大元帅军衔。
就这样，制作大元帅服成为解放军总后军需装备研究所一项重要任务。对于这项任务，领导高度重视，专门从上海抽调刺绣技工参加大元帅服、元帅服的试制工作。
制成的大元帅礼服采用海蓝色纯毛华达呢面料、西服式样，上衣为大驳头翻领，双排六粒金黄色国徽图案纽扣；下身为散腿裤；领边、袖头、裤中缝镶正红牙边，领边、 袖口绣金钱一道和松技叶，领头和袖头各绣一颗五角星；大元帅礼帽为大檐帽，帽瓦边镶红色牙线、金属丝带，并配金黄色国徽图案帽扣等。
后来，在彭德怀、罗荣桓向毛泽东汇报授衔、授勋工作时，毛泽东在表扬他们的工作成绩后说：“我这个大元帅就不要了，让我穿上大元帅制服，多不舒服啊。到群众中去讲话、活动多不方便。”
因此，为毛泽东精心制作的大元帅礼服从未穿过，一直珍藏在中国革命军事博物馆，如今已成为一件有历史意义的文物。
风靡全国的“65式”
1965年，我军取消军衔，全军官兵一律戴解放帽及红五星帽徽和红领章，服装面料是纯棉布。
