Giovanni Bottesini （1821-1871） 为十九世纪意大利的低音提琴名家、作曲家、指挥家。因他对于低音提琴演奏中，精湛技巧的贡献，而被誉为低音提琴的帕格尼尼。他出生于1821年12月22日意大利北方的克利马（Crema），五岁起开始接触音乐，与舅舅学习小提琴。在他13岁要进入米兰音乐院就读时，正好有两项乐器提供奖学金的空缺，单簧管家及作曲家的父亲便询问他，是要选择低音管（Bassoon）或是低音提琴（Double Bass）的乐器呢？年轻的波特西尼选择了低音提琴，但并不是这项乐器的特殊性质吸引了他，而是因为他从小就对弦乐器比较认识。
波特西尼曾与威尔第（G. Verdi）学习作曲，谱出的12出歌剧，使他成为出色的歌剧作曲家，而最受人瞩目的便是：1871年指挥威尔第的阿伊达《Aida》作品首演，并于其后在威尔第的推荐下，当选Parma音乐院院长！生平除写下多数的低音提琴作品外，还有安魂曲、神剧与弦乐四重奏。而写给低音提琴的歌剧式风格幻想曲，大部分是源自于贝里尼（Bellini）的歌剧主题，例如：梦游女幻想曲、Puritani幻想曲。 Gary Karr专辑 《Super Double Bass》

美国的时代杂志曾经赞扬盖瑞.卡尔为居世界领导地位之低音提琴独奏家(the world’s leading solo bassist)，不仅如此，盖瑞.卡尔也是史上第一位将低音提琴独奏作为全职的低音提琴独奏家，而盖瑞.卡尔所拥有由库赛夫斯基遗孀所致赠的1611年的低音提琴Amati使得盖瑞.卡尔的音乐成就更蔚为传奇。 1962年，盖瑞.卡尔在纽约卡内基音乐厅由伯恩斯坦指挥纽约爱乐下首演，他精湛的演奏由电视现场转播，从此一炮而红，展开独奏家的演奏生涯，在他的一生中，纽约的首演是他的重大转折点。从此他以独奏家身分走遍六大洲，与许多著名乐团合作演出，如纽约爱乐乐团、芝加哥交响乐团、伦敦爱乐乐团、伦敦交响乐团、巴黎爱乐乐团、蒙特利尔交响乐团、多伦多交响乐团、委内瑞拉卡拉卡斯的西蒙玻利瓦乐团、耶路撒冷交响乐团、奥斯陆爱乐乐团、苏黎世室内乐团、香港爱乐乐团、台湾的国家音乐厅交响乐团、以及澳洲的各大交响乐团等。
