说到祭月，我首先想到的是克拉克在《2001太空漫游》中描写的第一只开化的古猿—望月者。虽是科幻小说，但也从侧面印证了人类对日月的情感决定了古猿与其它动物的不同，从而在某一方面决定了人的进化。
后来，人类社会初具规模后，这种望月情怀也演变成月亮崇拜。排名古代中国十大神兽第二位的是太阴幽萤，太阴就是道教兴起后对月亮的称呼。由此可见，月亮在中国的地位仅次于太阳。
而祭月就源于上文中的月亮崇拜，后来月被人格化，成为月神，历代皇家称为‘夜明之神’，民间则多认为月神是嫦娥，称之为月姑或月姐。
周朝，每年秋分时节，天子率群臣祭祀月神，《礼记》中，“天子春朝日，秋夕月，朝日以朝，夕日以夕”，讲的就是祭月。祭月的具体流程比较繁琐，会发在后来的文章中。由此，祭月成为皇家专制。
后来 随着社会的发展，民间也开始祭月，在明清时形成完备的规格与体系。具体流程如下：在园内设大香案，摆上月饼、西瓜、苹果、红枣、李子、葡萄等祭品，其中月饼和西瓜是绝对不能少的，西瓜还要切成莲花状。在月下，将月亮神像放在月亮的那个方向，红烛高燃，全家人依次拜祭月亮，然后由当家主妇切开团圆月饼。切的人预先算好全家共有多少人，在家的，在外地的，都要算在一起，不能切多也不能切少，大小要一样。
中秋“烧斗香”是上海及江南地区中秋节最热闹和隆重的仪式。香斗一般是由香烛店制作的，形状四方似斗，上大下小，大的四周各宽有二尺多。香斗四周糊着纱绢，绘有月宫亭台楼阁等图画，也有的香斗用线香编绕而成，斗中插有纸扎的龙门魁星以及彩色旗旌等装饰，“斗香”扎成三层，香排列整齐，每层还插上小红旗，扎好后看起来很壮观。
烧香斗，有为家人科举夺魁祈福之意。清人秦荣光《上海县竹枝词》：“中秋赏月竞开筵，月饼堆盘月样圆。礼斗香还烧大斗，南园向最盛香烟。”说的就是这种情景。“踏月”之夜走三桥在江南水乡，中秋夜水中看月，也是中秋节之夜的民俗活动之一。
苏州有“石湖看串月”，老上海有“石梁夜月”，毫无例外地成为江南中秋夜的保留节目。老上海的“陆家桥”，指的是明代弘治年间进士陆深捐资建造的石桥，又叫作“万云桥”“学士桥”，桥身高二十四级，有环洞三只，中秋夜月影斜穿环洞投到水面被叫作“串月”，成为一处胜景，吸引了大批市民驻足观看。
苏州的“石湖看串月”，也是指月亮偏西时洒下的光辉透过了九个环洞，直照北面的水面上。这时，波光粼粼，在石湖水面上可以看到一串月亮的影子。为了看这一年一度的胜景，大批游客近悦远来，租船、占位置，等待“串月”的出现。“夜半潮声看串月，几人醉倚望河亭”。老上海中秋节之夜还流行“踏月”之俗。踏月，也叫“走月亮”“走百病”。
王韬《瀛壖杂志》说：“夜间妇女盛妆出游，互相往还，或随喜园亭，人静更阑，犹婆娑月下，谓之‘踏月’”；宝山人周兆鱼《潜溪杂咏》也写道：“走过三桥风露重，凉痕怕涴藉丝裙。”看来，走月亮是女子中秋之夜的保留节目了。
苏州的同里古镇，一定要走太平桥、吉利桥和长庆桥三桥，因为它有这样的寓意，民众俗信通过走月亮的方式可以除病延年。清袁学澜有《姑苏竹枝词》专为形容这一民俗：“中秋共把斗香烧，姊妹邻家举手邀。联袂同游明月巷，踏歌还度彩云桥。”夜空晴朗，经过精心打扮的妇女们一道出门，迎着染桂花香的秋风默默向月亮女神倾诉心愿。这种习俗，就是在今天也很有诗意。
