一、人类赖以生存和发展的物质基础。
自然资源的范围不是无限的，要注意它的具体范围，主要是指人类科学技术能够使用的资源，这和人类科技进步有密切关系。例如对太阳能的利用，对风力资源、核能资源的利用等等。有了资源也就有了生产的基础，“土地是财富之母，劳动是财富之父”（亚当·斯密）。具体论述要讲到唯物主义哲学，引用马克思的观点来看。
二、为人类生产生活提供条件
不要把这一点同上一点相混，前者指的是生存，是最基本的要求，而这一点主要是从自然资源的特殊性，日常性入手，注重的是其经济价值。
三、认识和实践的对象
自然资源（natural resources）：凡是自然物质经过人类的发现，被输入生产过程，或直接进入消耗过程，变成有用途的，或能给人以舒适感，从而产生经济价值以提高人类当前和未来福利的物质与能量的总称。
狭义的自然资源只包括实物性资源，即在一定社会经济技术条件下能够产生生态价值或经济价值，从而提高人类当前或可预见未来生存质量的天然物质和自然能量的总和。广义

自然资源可分为可再生资源、可更新自然资源和不可再生资源。自然资源具有可用性、整体性、变化性、空间分布不均匀性和区域性等特点。自然资源可划分为：生物资源、农业资源、森林资源、国土资源、矿产资源、海洋资源、气候气象、水资源等。
1．耗竭性自然资源。它以一定量蕴藏在一定的地点，并且随着人们的使用渐减少，直至最后消耗殆尽。矿藏资源就是一种典型的耗竭性自然资源。
2．稳定性自然资源。它具有固定性和数量稳定性的特征。如土地资源。
3．流动性自然资源，也称再生性资源。这种资源总是以一定的速率不断再生，同时又以 一定的速率不断消失，如阳光、水(水域资源除外)、森林等。
流动性自然资源又可以分为两小类：一是恒定的流动性自然资源。它们在某一时点的资源总员总是保持不变，如阳光资源和水能资源等。二是变动的流动性自然资源。它们在某一时点的资源总量会由于人们的开发使用而发生变化，如森林资源和水体资源等。
