王安石无疑是伟大的，属正面人物，变法大体上也取得了成功，当时也一定程度上达到了富国强兵的目标，或者说达到了阶段目标，只是支持变法的最终后盾宋神宗死了，才没能继续进一步弥补和完善，不仅没能完全成功，反而夭折导致失败。传统上对他的评价负面都是因为以孔孟之道正统自居的文人掌握了话语权。可以说传统上伪孔孟之道掌握主导地位的时期都是中华文明倒退的时期，总体上也导致了中华文明迟迟没有进步的原因，之所以说是伪，其实孔子思想中除了礼的部分，还有很多更有价值的主张变革创新思想的，那些文人就是只取孔子的礼，不理解或者不愿或者害怕孔子的真正有价值的思想，孔子不落后（春秋战国时期没有哪派思想是落后的，那个时期可以说是中华文明最有魅力的时期），落后的是后来把他写在大旗上的文人和统治者，甚至包括现在的很多文人。
司马光不仅保守，更是狭隘，对于中华文明来说，完全可以定性为反面，掌权后，虽然认识到了变法的诸多可取，却仅仅因为对王安石个人的不满，才全盘否定变法，甚至还把王安石强兵好不容易扩张的土地无偿归还给了西夏，开始了宋朝的国力又进入衰弱轨道，最后亡国。可以推断，如果司马光不是个性狭隘，即使行为保守一些，能维持变法的成果，甚至继续弥补完善变法的不足，那中华历史完全就是另外走向。可以说除了《资治通鉴》这本书，司马光没有任何可取之处，反倒危害了当时。
无论过去还是未来，人类文明虽然总体上在往前，但都是在某次变革中前行的，也都是在保守僵化中后倒退的。
这两个人无所谓忠或者奸，他们的政治主张都是基于当时的社会现状和贵族的基本利益提出来的，王安石想要宋朝长远发展，但他提出的政策很大程度上侵犯了当时的贵族利益，而司马光则是维护贵族利益的，中学课本上是从历史观上说的，纵观整个宋代历史，放弃了王安石变法，在一定程度上加速了宋朝的灭亡，而宋史演义则是基于当时特定的历史背景来说的，王安石变法虽然可以一定程度上挽救宋王朝，但是，他的政策也只是延缓了宋朝的灭亡速度而已，毕竟宋朝积弱已久，作为维护贵族利益的典型代表，司马光自然是受到当时众人所拥护的，于此也就出现了针对二人的不同评价
对于历史名人，我们不能单纯的说他们是好或坏，必须把他们放到当时的历史背景下，结合当时的历史走向来分析人物，一如白起，坑杀楚军与现在来说是残暴了些，但对当时秦国的经济政治发展，却是起了一定的促进和维护作用
他们两个都是正面的人物，只是政见不合而已，对于这场变法的看法不一样，因此导致他们成为了政敌，但是他们两个还是很惺惺相惜的
司马光是反对王安石的政治主张，不是反对人。宋代的政治不像明清那么黑暗。
王安石的变法从根本上说是好的，但是方式太激进了，而且没有明确的清晰的实施途径，只是提出目标，却没有提出好的解决方法。
正是王安石的变法，导致新旧两派冲突，结果都是为了反对而反对，失去了宋初知识分子的使命感，最后亡国。
从人格来说，两人都是好人。
历史是没有绝对的好人和坏人的，只是看他们在大多数的历史事件中的态度，司马光和王安石在历史中都算是正面人物，宋史演义中演义二字就说明了这本书是在历史事实的基础上进行的改变或者是虚化，所以里面有了作者对于两个人物有了主观的个人喜恶，跟三国演义中亲刘贬曹是相似的，司马光在王安石变法中反对了王安石，看起来是坏人，但是王安石变法其实是有很多不合理之处的，它不符合当时的宋朝的积贫积弱的特点，司马光反对他一是因为此，二也是因为变法触犯了他的利益。至于说历史贡献，司马光也曾经写过《资治通鉴》。
