战国时期，许多小国都先后被大国吞并了，最后只剩下秦、楚、齐、赵、韩、魏、燕七个国家。七国之中，秦国的实力最强，它不断地派兵向邻国进攻，实行蚕食政策，扩大自己的疆土。
从公元前276年开始，魏国连续三年都遭到了秦国的攻打，不但损兵折将，而樱旦且丢失了很多城池。三年之后，秦军终于打败了魏、赵、韩三国的联军，杀了十五万人，并且俘虏了魏国大将芒卵。
这时，魏国的另一名大将段干子向魏王出主意，建议把魏国的南阳城割让给秦国以换取暂时的和平。谋臣苏代对魏王说：“想要得到大将印玺(某ǐ)的人是段干子，想要得到魏国土地的是秦国。
现在，大王却让想得到土地的人掌管印玺，让想得到印玺的人管理土地。我看，在魏国的土地没有割让完之前，他们是不会罢休的。此外，用割地的办法去讨好秦国，就好像是抱着柴草去救火一样，柴草没有燃烧完之前，火是不会熄灭的。”
魏王听了段干子和苏代的话，始终拿不定主意，致使魏国的土地不断地被秦国侵占，国力也不断地遭到削弱。公元前225年，魏国还是被秦国灭高颂茄掉了。
后来，人们就用“抱薪救火”来比喻一个人处理问题不得当，结果形势发展和最初的愿望相戚察违背，不但不能彻底解决问题，反而增添了许多新的困难。
