孔子（前551 - 前 479）
中国伟大的哲学家孔子是中华文化思想的集大成者，儒家学说的创始人。他的哲学思想提倡「仁义」，「礼乐」，「德治教化」，以及「均以民为体」。儒学思想渗入中国人的生活，文化领域中，同时与影响了世界上其它地区的一大部分人近两千年。
孔子名丘，字仲尼。春秋末期鲁国陬邑（山东曲阜）人，出身于没落的宋国贵族家庭，刻苦好学。曾从事「儒」（贵族丧事赞礼者）的职业，中年时开办私学。一度出任鲁国的中都宰，司空，司寇等职，四年后因遭小人暗算，弃职，后率弟子周游列国，经十三年，晚年归鲁，继续讲学，整理古籍。《论语》20篇，是孔子弟子及其再传弟子关于孔子言行的纪录。
孔子经常被认为是一种宗教的创始人，但这是不正确的。孔子及少谈论神，拒绝讨论来世，避免任何形式的形而上学。他对人生的关系深刻了解，他的学说并不是他所创立的，严格来说，他只是及中华文化思想的大成者。他是一位重视个人的伦理道德和行为的现世哲学家。
孔子把「仁」和「义」视为道德的最高原则，他规范着高尚者的行为。「仁」在有些时候可以解释为「爱」，但我们最好将他理解为对人类的关心。「礼」是道德，礼节，规矩，传统等观点的总和。
孔子生活在春秋时代，那是一个人才辈出的年代。虽然当时的统治者没有采纳孔子的学说，然而在他死后，儒家成为显学。但是在秦始皇统治时期，儒家学说遭到贬抑。公元前221年，秦始皇统一中国。他采用法家的建议，下令「焚书坑儒」。以为这样就可以整齐学术，统一思想。然而，秦始皇的努力并不成功，在秦朝灭亡前夕，儒生们又开始宣讲儒家学说。西汉时期的汉武帝时代，儒家学说取得了独尊的地位。
通过科举考试选拔官吏的中国科举制度，始于汉朝。考试的主要内容，是学生们对孔子礼教的理解程度。由于科举制度是步入仕途的唯一途径，所以由汉朝开始，一直到十九世纪，中国几乎所有的知识分子，都在孔子的四书五经中打转。知识分子穷一生精力从事研究他的学说，一生都跳不出这个圈子。大大影响了中华文化的多元化发展。
中国的历史就是孔子思想的影响史。《四书五经》成了学校的教科书，每一个学生都必须熟记。古代哲人的教条，深深地植跟于人民的心中。由于这种儒学的熏陶，中国逐发展出一种和谐的社会生活，追求智识崇尚智慧的狂热，以及稳健的文化。中国虽经常遭受侵略，旦其文化不但能屹立不绕，而且还能同化异族。但是，儒学并不是万能灵药。他对于统治者来说，是一剂有效的灵药，能使他们的王朝尽量避免混乱和衰落的来临。但是，对于在求变求新的国际竞争压迫下，对于一国的发展，是个阻碍，那些维系个人和社会秩序的礼教，几乎使人无法动弹，而造成一套用不改变的模式。孔子的教条。彻底的限制了人类自然而充沛的冲劲。孔子的那些礼教实在太完美了，以致显得过分的严肃。在孔子的教条下，简直没有豪放和冒险，爱情和友谊也过分的受到桎梏。他使妇女一味服从，贬低了自己。
“五四”新文化运动中“打倒孔家店”这一著名口号给人的印象，似乎是“五四”那批代表人物都是全盘否定儒家思想和传统文化的。更有一种观点，认为“五四”以来在文化领域就开始了一种过激主义的“左”的倾向，似乎解放以后严重泛滥的“左”倾思潮，以至“文化大革命”的发生，都可以追溯到“五四”运动，这使我有些不解。
“五四”新文化运动与中外历史上多次启蒙运动采取尊古、复古的形式有所不同，是以鲜明的反传统形式出现的。因为从旧的思想、道德、文化中，不仅很难找到改革的基点或旗号，而且日益显示严重的障碍。而选定“孔家店”这个突破口，无疑有利于冲破旧的以封建政治、伦理秩序为核心的文化格局。然而，另一方面，那些代表人物并不是“全盘反传统”的，从胡适的著述中可以看到，他对孔子和朱熹都怀有敬意。又如当时对旧文化作激烈批判的另一位人物钱玄同，他曾一度主张废除汉字，但他在坚决反对学术、文化领域的专制主义时，又十分向往中国古人所幻想的“万物并育而不相害，道并行而不相悖”的宽阔而自由的世界。对于孔子本人或以孔子为代表的儒家思想，他们主要是把批判的锋芒指向利用儒家经典来箝制人的思想与个性。所以，“五四”新文化运动的基本精神，是要求思想自由、精神独立、个性解放。“五四”运动并没有造成什么“文化断裂”或“思想危机”，而是在中国走向现代化的历史过程中起着承先启后的重要作用。 至于解放后一度愈演愈烈的“左”倾思潮，最后导致“十年动乱”的发生，恰恰表现为文化专制主义，是与“五四”新文化运动的基本精神相背离的，而且另有国际国内的社会思想根源
