相传妈祖的真名为林默, 林默娘，诞生于宋建隆元年（960年）农历三月二十三日。宋太宗雍熙四年（987年）九月初九逝世。妈祖是福建莆田望族九牧林氏后裔。祖父林孚，官居福建总管。父林愿(惟殷)，宋初官任都巡检。在她出生之前，父母已生过五个女儿，十分盼望再生一个儿子，因而朝夕焚香祝天，祈求早赐麟儿，可是这一胎又是一个女婴，父母大失所望。就在这个女婴将要出生前的那个傍晚，邻里乡亲看见流星化为一道红光从西北天空射来，晶莹夺目，照耀得岛屿上的岩石都发红了。所以，父母感到这个女婴必非等闲之女，也就特别疼爱。因为她出生至弥月间都不啼哭，便给她取名林默，父母又称她为林默娘，默娘。
