绘画，作为视觉艺术，是通过一定的色彩、线条、形状，构成异常精确具体而又个性化的图景，以传达审美经验供人感受的艺术。
绘画的体裁、样式异常纷繁多样，可以从不同角度去作艺术学的分类，如就题材内容以及社会功用目的看，有肖像画、风景画、静物画、历史画、宣传画、年画、连环画、漫画等等，如就使用的物质媒介和工具看，有油画、水墨画、水彩画、色粉画、版画等等，不论体裁样式如何，绘画作为审美对象，应用比较一致的共性。
如果说雕塑的审美特性，强调的是造型的单纯和观念的纯粹，那么绘画在这两方面都趋向精确具体了。黑格尔说“绘画所采用的基本内容既要有丰富的深刻情感，又要有对人物性格和性格特征方面刻划很深的个别特殊因素；既要有对一般内容的亲切情感的具体事迹，情况和情境必须显得不只是说明个别人物性格，而是应使个别特殊因素显得是深深地铭刻到或则说，植根到灵魂和面貌表情里，而且完全从外界事物形状里吸收过来的”。又说：绘画由深刻的严肃性的题材转到外在界特殊具体的现象的前进过程中，“必然要走到专注意单纯外在现象的极端”，“这里我们就看到天空、时节和树林光彩的瞬息万变的景象，云霞、波涛、江湖等的光和返光杯中酒所放出的闪烁的光影，眼光的流动以及一瞬间的神色和笑容之类，用最高的艺术手腕凝定下来”。从黑格尔的看法中，可以看出，绘画的艺术比起雕塑来，对象的细节描绘主体内心的表现的统一，乃是绘画的审美特性。总之，一句话，绘画比雕塑更富于个性化，在外在形式的精雕细刻中去表现心灵的个性。
但是绘画所描绘的现实生活场景，人物表情、心灵个性、都是处在不断变化的生活长河之中，而绘画却借助线条、色彩、形状把它们凝冻起来，这显然是一个矛盾，因此必须解决这个矛盾。莱辛曾提出一个解决办法，就是化动为静，以静写动，他把这个方法叫“暗示”。他说：“绘画描绘物体，通过物体，以暗示的方式去描绘运动，”那么怎样以一种动态的描绘去显示运动呢？他认为“只能运用动作中某一倾刻，所以它应该选择蕴育丰富的那一倾刻，从这一倾刻可以最好理解到后一倾刻和前一倾刻，这就是说，绘画必须善于从运动的生活中去捕提选择，提炼那蕴育，包含着运动前因后果的静止的倾刻，通过这一静止的凝炼的倾刻去表现那运动的连续性，“外部的面貌能展示内心的一切，静止的场景能表现出运动的行程。”这就是绘画所采用解决静止的画面与运动着的现实的矛盾的办法。
无论是东方的绘画或西方的绘画，传统式或现代式的绘画；它所表达的内容和形式都是通过艺术家生活实践的积累所再现的一种艺术手段，绘画是反映艺术家本人的构思，也表达对事物的一种情感寄托，记载着历史和发展，一个画面虽是静止的，但它表达的内容却一种愉悦或者浪漫及庸俗，脱离现实又接近现实超现实的一种意境，无论是绘画的风格或内容形式来看，绘画不仅是种语言，也是一种艺术，而且是一门科学，它随着社会的变化而变化，随着人的情感变化而变化，随着形式的发展而发展。
绘画不仅有它的审美性、实用性、还有永恒性。它作为一种传播手段，能把握人的心灵，在物质和精神方面是一种超越，正因如此才能体现出它的价值，绘画作品对人的教育，常常是在毫无强制的情况下，使欣赏者不知不觉受到感染，在这种渐渐地长期作用下使人潜移默化的教育作用。通过艺术欣赏活动，使人们审美需要得到满足，获得精神享受和审美愉悦，愉心悦目、畅神益智，使身心得到愉快和休息。如同绘画创作是一种自由自觉的活动，艺术家在创作中处于一种完全忘我的状态，沉醉其中并获得极大的满足和快乐一样。
绘画，不仅种类和形式丰富多彩，而且由于各国和民族在社会政治经济和文化传统等方面的差异，世界各力绘画在艺术形式，表现手段艺术风格等方面存在着明显的区别。一般认为从古埃及、波斯、印度和中国等东方及明古国发展起来的东方绘画，与从古希腊，古罗马绘画发展起来的欧洲为中心的西方绘画，是世界上最重要的两大绘体系。它们在历史上互有影响，对人类文明作出了各自的重要贡献。
但是，不管是东方绘画，还是西方绘画，它作为一种主要的艺术形式，有其共同的特点，这主要表现在它是通过可以直接看到的，有形有色的具体的艺术形象来反映和抒发画家对客观现实感受的。在塑具体的而且可以直接看见的艺术形象这一点上，它比小说、诗歌显得具体形象，更易为广大群众所接受。但是由于一幅画一般只能表现一个相对静止的瞬间，不能象小说、诗歌、电影、戏剧那样表现人物和事件的发展过程，也不能像小说、戏剧那样可以从人物的对话或者通过概括的说明来介绍人物和事件。所以，它有一定的局限性，为了克服这种局限性，优秀的绘画作品善于选择人物或事件最富有概括性和表现力的瞬间。这种瞬间形象在画面上虽然是固定不变的，但由于绘画提供的人物形象是具体的而且可以直观的，只要刻划的好，却同样可以具有引人入胜的艺术魅力。古今中外的许多名画都可以说明这一点。
其次，绘使用的物质材料和工具，如纸、木板、布、笔墨、颜料、刀等。其它艺术（如文学），更有其它特殊作用。这主要表现在文学作品虽然也要使用一定的物质材料（如笔、墨、纸），但它单纯起一种工具的作用，与作品所要塑造的艺术形象并不可分割的关系。然而绘画则不同。它所使用的物质材料除起一种工具的作用外，物质材料本身固有也是创造艺术形象，特别是构成审美价值的主要因素，例如，中国画的笔墨情趣，油画的笔角和丰富的色彩感。木刻的刀法和“木味”等等，不仅与艺术形象有着不可分割的关系，而且它本身也具有审美价值。
此外，绘画在题材范围方面比其它艺术更广泛。例如，小说戏剧不能以自然风景或静物作为自己的描写对象。但在绘画中，风景画和静物画都是一种完全独立的绘画体裁，而且它在历史上还一度成为绘画艺术的主体，也正因为绘画比其它艺术在题材范围上更为广泛，所以，绘画是整个美术以至整个艺术门类中特别丰富多彩的艺术形式之一。
