现藏于中国历史博物馆的北宋济南刘家功夫针铺的雕刻铜版，是世界上迄今发现的最早的印刷广告物。
1815年8月，英国传教士米怜在马来亚创办了《察世俗每月统纪传》，这是最早的刊登广告的定期中文刊物。
1853年，由英国传教士在香港发行并销售到广州、上海等地的《遐尔贯珍》刊物，首先利用刊物兼办广告业务。
1858年，在香港出版的《孖刺报》，增出中文版《中外新报》，最早刊登了商业广告。
1904年，国人开办闵泰广告社。国人开办的广告公司中，规模较大的有成立于1926年的华商广告公司和成立于1930年的联合广告公司。
我国最早的广告研究团体是1918年在北京成立的北京大学新闻学研究会。
1927年，上海有六家广告社组织成立“中华广告公会”，这是我国广告同业的最早组织。
